Author's Review
I had wanted this camera for a long time, so I finally sent in my order to 1-888-Camcorders. I needed it in time for Christmas, however, and they called the 14th saying it wouldn't be able to come in, so I went to Best Buy and purchased it for $900.00 Then I spent another $400.00 on accesories...is it worth it?, you ask. It totally is! I love the fact that this takes digital pictures as well as Video. It's really cool, too, that when you finalize the disk, the camera will arrange all of your pictures into a slideshow at the end of your disk. This means, that you could take video of someone blowing out the candles on their cake, and then take a picture of the cake being cut, and the picture would not be in the middle of the video, but rather at the end of the disk. This holds a ton of pictures, too, compared to a digital camera. If you put the camera on it's highest feature you can take APX. 30 mins. of video and 350 pictures. The battery on this camera lasts about 75 minutes if you are using the excellent LCD, or 90 if you are using the color viewfinder. Their are some functions such as the viewing function, that you have to open the LCD for, because the buttons you press are concealed by the LCD.
In broad daylight this camcorder records with awesome, almost movie-like quality. The darker you get, however, the worse your videos/images become. The camera does have something that allows you to see with "night vision." In this mode, everything is perfectly clear, and you can see things even in the pitch black of night, however everything recorded in this mode has a lime green, alienish look to it...such as a advanced pair of binoculars has at night.
This camcorder doesn't have a flash, which is a bummer, but one can be purchased from Sony, that fits in a slot on the top of the camcorder. The flash costs around $200. I would buy an additional battery, If I were you, or a higher capacity one. A case is also a must, and tripods are highly recommended.
The media this records on, are DVD-R and DVD-RW. These are not standard size, but rather a mere 8mm. They play in most every DVD player, computer DVD players, and Sony Playstation 2's. The discs are pretty pricey...about $7.oo
or R and $13.oo for RW. Overall, this camera is very simple to use and has many great functions.
