Product Review

Excellent combination of touring comfort & performance

by   daleb ,   Sep 2, 2006

Pros:  Styling, power, handling, braking, and did I mention performance?

Cons:  Limited cargo and rear passenger space A few quirky features

The Bottom Line:  Recommended for the sporty driver who appreciates some luxury and great styling blended in at a competitive price

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

I also purchased a used 2004 coupe. Diamond Graphite with the premium package, Sport 18" wheels which includes limited slip differential. It has the 5 speed auto which comes with a manual mode.
The thoughtful owner also had a clear bra installed to protect the front from chips as well as optional high grade window tint.
Both auto and manual 6 speeds of this model year were rated at 280 hp. The manual mode of the auto allows the driver to hold it in gear for more sporty driving or to allow better engine braking.
Based on the 350Z, this more touring oriented coupe maintains the Z heritage with little compromise in the handling and power areas, but more in comfort and convenience features. Driver's seating is excellent, and the instrument panel moves when you adjust the steering wheel to give a completely unobstructed view at your favorite seating position.
I purchased this car from a good friend who gave it lots of TLC, and it shows in it's appearance as well as the still new feel in handling, braking, and acceleration. It has just under 20,000 miles on the odometer.
Being rear wheel drive, it offers a nimbleness not found on more common front wheel drive vehicles.
At the same time, it does require more attention from the less experienced driver, as it can be tossed about quite easily. Especially when making turns, the application of more power than needed will have the rear end stepping out to meet you. Thanks to safety features like electronic stability control, those instances are held within bounds quickly. The VDC (as it is called) can be switched off for more user involvement.
If you like to drive with some degree of abandonment, as a more experienced driver you will love this car. There is tons of torque available from the V6 across the band. And handling is rivaled by only a few in it's class, like BMW. This too is a driver's car, and I will be saying that again!
You can make very fast controlled turns, all the while amazed at amount of control available, and the virtual lack of any body lean.
The rumble of the exhaust at start-up will remind you what is in store if you choose to select it. But if you choose to cruise the boulevard, or highway on a long journey, you will appreciate the firm, but smooth ride. And the exhaust which adds to the thrill but becomes virtually silent at cruising speed.
Road noise, especially at lower speeds, is to be expected from the very aggressive tread used on the wide tires.
The rear seats are just okay for taking one or two adults to lunch, but limited to small children for longer journeys. Headroom in the rear is very limited.
The trunk is adequate by sports car standards, and the rear seat folds down to carry even more. Although, the total storage space would be dwarfed by a typical domestic car trunk.
There are a few quirks like the slow moving seats to accommodate rear access, and the front seat backrests that have to be readjusted following that maneuver. It does have small reminders that say the 2 extra seats in the back are only a minor convenience. And like I stated, this is a driver's car.
Mine did not come with navigation, but I was able to easily adapt a Garmin portable unit.
Gas mileage is fair. Driving it for everyday use can be frustrating with all those anxious horses under the hood, but depending on your route home, a little burst of acceleration to pass or to get on the freeway, or a little fast cornering on a safe quiet road, can make even that daily journey a little less boring as you wait for the weekend. And you will look great as you drive by.
