First of all, if you're looking for a book to show you how to control someone
else's life, you're looking in the wrong place! This book is designed to assist
the reader to learn to protect themselves, and to help themselves heal from
wounds and thinking less of ourselves than the Lord would want.
This book has the subtitle "Learn to Take Control of Your Life."
and that's what you learn. Learning who you are, your own limits, and how to
say yes and no, at the right times.
Drs. Cloud and Townsend combine scripture with modern psychotherapy to show
you how the Lord has made our minds and bodies with limits, both mentally and
physically. How we are raised, who we live with, and who we use as our mentors
all reflects how we handle our stressors in life. They open new doors for you
to see how we are treated, how we let people "step" on us, and how
to Biblically reprove t hose that do so, in order to protect ourselves. If you
learn by example, this book will be incredibly helpful to you. If you happen
to be a "doer", this book will outline the steps for you to make healthy
changes in your life in regards to interaction with other people.
Used in a very effective way, is the story of a woman who has no rules in her
life in regards to interaction with her family, co-workers, and herself. She
feels belittle, ragged, and worn down. As you learn and compare your life to
the lead "example" in the book, you quickly see how you can change
areas of your own human interaction. At the end of the book, you see the same
character, applying the Biblical principles within the book, and discover how
easy and rewarding something like this can be.
I honestly believe this book to be an important part of taking care of one's
self. Not only does it teach how to respect yourself, but it teaches basic respect
of others and their decisions. While difficult to swallow at times, the advice
is sound, and works, once you dedicate yourself to the principles within. While
easy to read and easy to begin the application of "Boundaries",
it is by no means an easy process as I have learned by experience. Entailed
within the book is a valuable chapter on how to ask others to help you make
these changes in your life.
This book is about how you feel, how you react, and how you handle life. Change
starts with one person.
I reccomend this book for all family members of addicts, and those that are
CoDependent.
