Author's Review
I get dozens of magazines delivered to my doorstep every month and just this past year, I decided that it was time to introduce my little girls to periodicals. Searching for some appropriate magazines yielded several good results and the one I ended up purchasing for my just- over- three year old is Your Big Backyard, a publication from the National Wildlife Federation.
Basic Contents of This Magazine:
Your Big Backyard includes about 30 pages in each issue with departments such as:
Game
My Little Book
Ever Wonder
The Adventures of Bonnie and Chester
Poster
Backyard Buddies
Ricky and Pals
Family Fun Guide
Odd Balls
Green Hour
Explore the Big Outdoors
Each issue of Your Big Backyard includes a featured animal on the cover that is also included on a tear- out poster in the middle of each issue. Cut- out learning tools, games, crafty creations, and other educational material are also found in each issue.
Magazine Web Page/Pricing:
Your Big Backyard doesn't have its own web site, like other magazines. Since it is intended for young children and since it is published by the National Wildlife Federation, the magazine is covered through the National Wildlife Federation web site, nwf.org. The magazine sells for a price that varies from one online site to another, but it can be found for $24 per year in most magazine online stores.
Final Thoughts:
Your Big Backyard is one of several excellent magazines issued by the National Wildlife Federation and it ranks as a great choice of reading material for youngsters in the target age group, which is between three and seven years of age. This magazine teaches children all about animals, with fun games and learning materials to stimulate interest in the great outdoors.
This magazine is aimed at learning and building an interest in children about wildlife and it succeeds on all counts. The cover picture on each issue of Your Big Backyard always features an animal and there are always a few accompanying pages of facts and pictures about the featured animal, including a poster in the middle of each issue that can be removed and placed on the refrigerator or tacked to a child's bedroom wall.
When Your Big Backyard isn't fascinating children with its facts and photos, it is offering games and other enjoyable learning tools and activities. Each issue, for example, includes a section titled "My Little Book", which includes a cut- out section with six squares. By folding the pages according to the instructions, a small book is created that serves as an educational tool about animals. Other fun material includes suggestions for outdoor games involving wildlife, animal- related crafts that can be created by kids using ordinary paper, tape, and other household supplies, and a fun guide that includes suggestions for songs, books, and more.
Your Big Backyard is mostly a visually- stimulating magazine, and this makes it perfect for children in the target age group. Kids will like learning the facts about different animals, but what they will like even more is looking at the pictures. The photography includes animals in their actual habitat, including close- up shots that help to educate children on specific traits of different animals. Besides the photographs, there are also some drawings of animals and there is even a section that displays some of the works of art drawn by little kids who submit their drawings and colorings to Your Big Backyard with the hope of getting published.
Overall, Your Big Backyard is an excellent magazine from the National Wildlife Federation and it ranks as yet another valuable publication from this well- known animal protection agency. It teaches children about animals, is loaded with great visuals for children, and offers games and other interactive tools to encourage quality time spent with your youngster. It is an educational read that earns an easy recommendation.
