Uplifting and Fun Soap Opera of a Film

After reading many dismal reviews, I wasn't sure I wanted to see this movie. In fact, were it not for my friends' invitation for a night out with dinner and NO kids (!!), I would not have put it highly on my list. However, I must say I'm so glad I saw it!

First let me say I have NOT read the book, so I can't say whether it is true to fact, or better or worse. However, I can say that the leading cast members (Natalie Portman, Ashley Judd, Stockard Channing, James Frain) portrayed an outstanding mix of well-developed characters who combined to make an entertaining, uplifting viewing experience.

The plot of the movie follows the soap opera scheme: tragedy, comedy, more tragedy, more tragedy, yet MORE tragedy, almost UNBEARABLE tragedy, (all the while sprinkled with just enough comedy to keep you watching), then a few morality speeches, all tied it up with a big happy ending. So what if it wasn't an Oscar-worthy production? For me, this was the perfect combination of melodrama, comedy, and heart-warming emotion to make the perfect Saturday night diversion from my own daily soap opera!
