Hulk Smash...again and again!
Date of Review: Sep 6, 2005
The Bottom Line: Wanna be the Hulk, get this game!
First off, the Hulk and Spider-Man are my two all-time favorites, so I'm somewhat partial to games based on these characters. Be that as it may, I found the most recent effort for the Hulk to be less then I'd hoped, as the game was extremely linear, short, and limited in scope of whom the Hulk really is. VU games have really turned a corner with this latest effort, as the game is a pure delight! The Hulk is one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe, and these abilities are on full display in this game.
Environment: The free-play aspects, ala GTA and Spider-Man II, really make the fun a fun and entertaining experience. The player can basically explore the city and roam about freely, without constraints of time and space (almost). The Starting City is huge, and even after leaving the city and moving onto the desert, one can still get a massive rush from scaling the skyscrapers and jumping from building to building. The different areas are varied, as are the bonus events at each site.
Action & Controls: It's just fun to Hulk Smash the environment and your opponents. The ability to destroy nearly everything in the game makes for some interesting ways to get things accomplished. Run out of cars to sling at helos, grab some huge boulders and toss one of them, or the burnt out "hulk" of a silly tank trying to go against the real Hulk! The different special moves that can be bought are also critical for game play, as the Hulk's Sonic Clap has always been a favorite move of mine! The player basically accumulates the smash points for "being" the Hulk, and smashing stuff, which allows the purchase of moves to smash more stuff. The special moves are not too difficult to execute, but understanding how and when to use them can be a bit complicated
Graphics & Acting: This is a mediocre aspect of the game, but while there is nothing groundbreaking about the graphics, it is differently serviceable and sufficient to provide a fun experience. The voice acting is okay as well but normally, I don't pay much attention to acting, unless it's horrendous.
Overall, This game has received across the board positive reviews from most reviewers, and they are well deserved. The effort is really superior for the genre, and this games matches up well against most any others I can think of, comparatively speaking. We can only hope for as good an effort on the next movie!
