Author's Review
The VMOS200 microwave by Viking, has a defect, that causes the fuse to blow, and power out. The defect is called a signal switch, which is somehow located in the door, and overheats causing a fuse blow out. The unit is made by Sharp, for Viking which changed the switch after unit no. 114617. Prior to that, some units are defective. The cure is a signal switch kit , and a fuse. How long this takes to get, I cannot say ( I can say now, see below) - our's just blew today, and our cracker jack repair man told me the whole story. He said once this is fixed, the units work just fine. Meanwhile, I called Viking to verify the story, and got the brush off from some female rep, who sounded like she knew as much about their microwave as my 2 year old son. SHE SAID THERE WERE NO SUCH REPORTED PROBLEMS!!!!!!! I asked to speak to a manager, and when I confronted him with the report given to me by my repair man, admitted it. He said there was a bulletin, and after no. 114617, there are no such reported problems. He said they reserve the right to fix defects even in brand new items, and that a swap would be between us and the seller. So, a word to the wise. Ask for the serial number, and make sure its greater than 114617. If yours breaks, you need a signal switch kit repair and a fuse (unless its something else). Its covered for 1 year by Viking.
I will admit, that for the 5 minutes I used it, it was extremely quiet, and did a great job. Once this quirk is out of it, I think it will probably be a great unit. But I think somebody, somewhere, should have recalled them all, and notified prior buyers about this. (Perhaps they have, but the service rep sounded like she never heard of this before !!??)
Chapter 2: It took only 5 days to get this part, and repaired (in the state of NJ). The unit is quiet, and powerful, and the button panel, appears to be user friendly, in conjunction with the blue grey, LED, read out.
So- I don't think a huge dissertation on microwaves is necessary, only to say, that the above information should allow you to either a) avoid a 5 day repair or b) get one over the above mentioned serial number.
We Viking fans, will prevail, with the usual great appliances.
Chapter 3: Its been several months now since the repair. The repair was of course covered, it took 20 minutes, and the unit works just fine. No problems since. Beautiful stainless exterior. Fast heating. User friendly buttons. And, the Viking seal is a big plus for potential home buyers.
