Author's Review
I currently own v-moda ($50) etymotic ($90), sony ($25), aiwa ($12) and stock ipod earbuds, which I think is a reasonable span of quality to cross-compare. The v-moda is the worst of the lot, both in terms of sound reproduction and fit. Re sound quality: the bass is in fact intense, but very muddy. Makes you feel like you're standing outside of a rapper's SUV with the windows up. The midrange is weak and there is no presence or soundstage. I've used them on an ipod and another mp3 player, adjusted all the EQ settings, and still very unsatisfied. Re fit: like my sonys, these are not-quite in-the-ear, but they tend to slip around and require readjustment every couple of minutes, whereas the sonys do not. This is especially problematic with these phones, because unless they sit exactly right in your ear, the sound is unlistenable. For some reason, the vmoda reviews aren't all that bad, but I can only believe that the company hired PR flacks to act as reviewers. Bottom line: don't buy them.
