Author's Review
I recently acquired this game for the xbox 360 and have not been disappointed. The premise was enough to draw me in...you're an assassin in 1191 AD tasked with eliminating certain targets in order to restore peace to the middle east. Initially I was skeptical about how good the game could really be. The game begins with you in apparel from the year 1191 with scenes fading in and out as you hear two people arguing about what to do with you. The truth about the game is soon revealed, but I won't spoil that part for you.
The gameplay overall is very good. It is very easy to run, jump, climb, and, yes, even assassinate. The world you inhabit is very detailed and lush. Running at a house or church will with the RT and A button pushed will induce your character to run up the wall a few steps and grab on to a ledge or rock, anything to get a foothold. If there is nothing to grab, you will fall back down to earth. Jumping for objects is fairly straightforward. As long as you have the RT and A button pressed when you're on top of a building your character will automatically attempt to get to the nearest foothold he is pointed at.
Weapons include a hidden dagger that may be used for stealth assassinations, a sword for fighting guards, a bent knife that is used also for fighting guards, but also for sneaking up on people and taking them out, throwing knives and your bare fists.
The fighting mode is well-explained and easy to learn, but when you're fighting 4-8 guards simultaneously, it can get annoying. For example, if you are targeting the person in front of you and are attacked from behind, you are very vulnerable, so keep attackers in front of you. One particularly useful kill method is to climb towers where guards are and actually throwing them off to their demise.
Finally, the missions. These are greatly varied and include the obvious assassinations, but also things such as saving citizens from assault by the police, eavesdropping, pickpocketing and scaling huge towers to get a lay of the land (which simultaneously reveals missions available).
All in all this is an excellent game that I would recommend to anyone who loves stealth games, fighting games, or even history.
