Author's Review
My wife and I began thinking about buying a new compact truck in October. We quickly narrowed the field down to the Ford Ranger, the Nissan Frontier, and the Toyota Tacoma. After test driving the Ford Ranger, we were down to two, as the 2002 Ford Ranger is the exact same truck that Ford was making in 1995! I hopped into the truck and had "deja vu", after driving I realized it was the exact same truck as my wife had (now the daughters truck). I don't know about you, but I expect an update every so often so the Ford was right out. For most of the next two months we were leaning towards the Nissan, mostly because of price and the fact that we have a dealership here in town. The closest Toyota dealership is 60 miles away. But after another test drive and reading as many reviews on the two companies, we definitly started going back to the Toyota. The Nissan had good power off the line, but soon ran out of breath, the styling was starting to rub me wrong, and we weren't hearing good things about the durability of the paint. The Toyota's biggest draw back was the price. But we used the Toyota site to get educated on options and prices and contacted two different dealerships to get a feel for how they would treat us. We decided to go with the Bob Howard Toyota in Edmond, OK and we are happy that we did. Everything that we discussed on the phone was exactly as it was when we took delivery. They had just finished cleaning, waxing and filling it up when we arrived. We asked for some touch-up paint, filters and gaskets and they were thrown in for free. The truck we bought was a 2002 Tacoma SR5 TRD Off-Road 4 X 4 with 3.4 6-cyl, 5-speed, with daytime lights, over the rail bedliner, metallic paint, console and RS3200 security system. All told we got the exact truck we wanted for $2000.00 less than MSRP and some freebies to boot. After 500 miles so far the truck feels solid. The radio is good, but we would like a CD changer that plays MP3's so that will be upgraded. My only complaint is with the defogging system. My 96 T-Bird has dedicated vents for defogging the driver and passenger windows. The Toyota does not, which means that if you are driving alone, you have to stop and aim the side air vents at windows to get the fog off of them.
