Author's Review

I knew immediatdly which soundtrack I wanted to write about for the Favorite Movie Soundtrack Write-Off hosted by MONICA2LME. I know others have written about this soundtrack, but I wanted to write about how this Titanic Soundtrack made me feel every emotion and gave me goosebumps with each turn.

When this movie came out, I saw it the day after Christmas. The Theater was packed and I was so filled with excitement I could hardly stand it. I saw the movie 10 times after that with different friends and family, almost being a Titanic Ambassador, telling people of what am impact this movie and its music had on my life and what understanding it brings to you as History becomes real right in front of you.

I rushed out and bought the soundtrack as soon as I left the Movies that night, wanting to hear that music to bring back the happiness before the tears. I opened the soundtrack, listened to each song with my eyes closed, and as I did, I was transported to the Titanic and all of it's beauty and magesty.

It was produced by James Horner who worked with James Cameron, the Director, on previous projects like the "Abyss." The only song with words are "My Heart Will Go On" which was written by Will Jennings, produced by James Horner, and sung by Celine Dion. Horner convinced Cameron to include that song in the movie because of the impact it had on the movie. He had Celine sing a demo for it, and played it for Cameron, who said he got teary eyed and agreed to add it at the end of the film.

Join me as we explore this wonderful, spell-bounding soundtrack as each song has a purpose, a meaning, a life....

1. Never An Absolution: The first song opens the movie up. An eerie chant as you see picture from the past as people wave goodbye to loved ones and get ready for that journey of a lifetime. The music overlaps into the Sub sinking into the depths of the ocean as it searches for that one special treasure that has not yet been recovered. I could listen to this all day-it makes me feel alive.

2. Distant Memories: Rose looks back at what used to be her, a drawing made by her long lost love, Jack Dawson. She sees her old comb and brush, tainted with old-age as it lays their stilly on the table. She is taken back to that time, those days, and that night...

3. Southhampton: Another favorite of mine as the ship is shown in all of it's wonderful glory and beauty. It's white paint shines in the morning sunlight, as people board and crew members take aboard luggage and that famous car! This is a wonderful song which expresses the size and strength of this ship, a piece of history that can never be taken from them. If you go sailing, I would recommend this song to listen to, as it uplifts your spirit and makes you feel free.

4. Rose: This is the that beautiful chant to the now famous song "My Heart Will Go On." There are no words, just music that makes you feel as if you are floating on clouds and that nothing can harm you. This song embraces Jack and Rose as they kiss and fade into the reality of darkness.

5. Leaving Port: Jack has just won his card game, and he and Fabrizzio are feverishly running to the ship to get aboard. They make it in time, and search the ship and all of its mystery. They go atop to wave good-bye to the spectators below. This is another great song that makes you want to move, run, jump, anything that makes you feel alive!

6. "Take Her To Sea Mr. Murdoch:" This is the song that backgrounds the activity of the ship, as Captain Smith gives the orders to "Take Her to Sea, Mr Murdoch." You sail past the engine room, everything working at full advantage, as the ship speeds up towards the afternoon light. Jack and Fabrizzio feel the magic, as they hold their hands out and yell to the wind "I'm the king of the World!" It is a beautiful piece of music as it makes you feel as if you can feel the ship moving underneath you, and the smell of the ocean air wafts past your nose.

7. "Hard to Starboard:" A young Rose and a handsome Jack fall into love as they explore the depths of the ship, and each other. This is the now famous car scene as their bodies and souls become one identity. They escape the car, just before crew members caught them, as they fall into each othera arms, laughing and enjoying their new found adventure. This is also the beginning of the end, as fate reveals it has other plans for these love birds. The music shadows the clash of the iceberg and the ship, and what the feelings nust be of everyone on board.

8. Unable to Stay, Unwilling to Leave: My favorite track on here, as I see myself as Rose, climbing into a life boat, letting go of my loved ones hand for the last time. The flares going off behind Jack as my boat lowers more and more. I can't live without him, so I jump off and back on the sinking ship, knowing that I could die too now, but it will at least be in Jacks loving arms. Gun shots go off, as Cal runs after Rose and Jack in jealous fury. The music makes you feel like you are right there, running through the ice cold water, and looking for safety from Cal and from the fate of the Ship.

9. The Sinking: This music is choppy as you can feel the emotions of each passenger rise, where do they go, what do they do. Panic sets is as third class passenegers are trapped below, and boats are sent away half full. The ship starts to sink faster now, as floor by floor is swallowed by the merciless ocean waters. The band tries to keep playing as the water comes rushing towards them. The Captain and Ship Builder, Mr Andrews decide their fate as they find their place on the ship, and die with it. The ship starts to crack in half, as people are thrown about like rag dolls. The ship starts to rise out of the waters, as people hold ontoanything for their dear lives. A priest prays in the background, while the lights flicker on and off, and then it goes dark and they are left with themselves and a boat which is dying a quick death. Rose and Jack hold onto each other and the back of the boat as it sinks to meet the icey cold waters and their fate.

10. Death Of Titanic: The ship sinks into the dark night as people are scatttered about like jigsaw puzzle pieces missing that critical piece. This music makes my heart sad, as I can feel the pain of a mother who puts her children to sleep for the last time, or for a father who knows that his death is near and is family is so far away. The climax of the music is eerie as you feel like you too are scared of what will happen, and what can you do to make this feeling go away.

11. A Promise Kept: The low sounds of an empty tune play, as you can see those bodies laying their, frozen with fear. I cry everytime I see the mother with her baby, what could have been going through her mind. Rose and Jack are now in the water, Rose lays on a raft while Jack makes her promise to never let go. A lifeboat's light shines past her, as she realizes that they have come back. She tries to awaken Jack, only to find that his light had gone out. The music makes me cry, as I cant imagine having to let go of a loved one so quickly, so soon, and try to have the courage to save my own life when all you want to do is die and be with that person.

12. A Life So Changed: This music expresses the emotions of Rose and the other survivors as to where and what should they do now. How do they go on living as nothing has happened, how do they live without thier loved ones?

My favorite line druing this music: "Afterward the seven hundred people in the boats had nothing to do but wait...wait to die.. wait to live.. wait for an absolution that would never come." Rose reaches New York, and finds the necklace in her pocket, as she glances at the Statue of Liberty. She becomes a Dawson now, and holds Jacks spirit close to her heart.

13. An Ocean of Memories: A now older Rose, has explained what had happened that terrifying night as the onlookers wipe tears and realize the impact it had on all of them. The music envelops Rose as she walks bearfoot across the ship to the back and throws the necklace into the very spot of the Ocean where Titanic had sank. She in now seen in bed, as we are taken past pictures of her life since the sinking, seeing what she owed to Jack for her life's accomplishments. Here you will hear the beautiful chanting again as Rose dies in her sleep and in transported into her dreams of Heaven as her soul dives into the deep waters, to the Titanic wreck, as the ship begins to become alive again. The decks start to shine again, as the beautiful doors are opened for her to see all of the souls that were taken that fateful day. The music makes my heart ache and tears flow, as Rose is united with Jack, at the clock, together again in heavens glow.

14. My Heart Will Go On: This song, sang by Celine Dion, my favorite singer, was made famous by this movie. It was played way to many times on the radio, but they got creative and made a version of this song with movie dialogue which i just LOVED!! It made me cry more to hear this song and then hear Rose say "I will never let go Jack, I'll never let go." This song plays during the credits, in which I just sat there EVERY time I saw it and bawled like a baby! I can't imagine what those people went through, and even knowing that Rose and Jack were fictional, I imagine there were many couples who lost thier loved ones that day. This song went on to win an Academy Award along with many others as well.

15. Hymn To The Sea: This last track wraps up all the emotions you have felt during the entire soundtrack, and puts a period at the end of a long, and sad sentence. The bagpipes are beautiful and express the sadness of the sinking of the Titanic.

I hope you have enjoyed my review and I recommend to anyone to buy this soundtrack. It makes a great gift for anyone and it is a great one to give along with the movie.
