Author's Review
"The Ship Who Sang "
To those of you who have never read Ann McCaffrey - but who love fantasy -you are in for a treat . Her ability to get the reader to suspend disbelief" and to accept the parameters of what she outlines as the real world , whether it be Dragonriders , Cyborg, Ships ,or ESP as a marketable "talent" ,is uncanny.
Ms. McCaffrey writes about her characters as if they were family , every nuance familiar , every strength and flaw built in and believable .
In the Ship Who Sang Ms. McCaffrey takes us to a place where even the less than perfect among us can be somebody . She states as fact the possibility that even the most crippled can lead productive , fulfilling lives . She doesn't whitewash the drawbacks of being encased in a ship , but rather explains the advantages of having wings to fly .
Helva - the Ship Who Sang - and the main character in this book - is the brain , while Jennan - the brawn - is her pilot , and in many ways - her first real interaction with another person . This book , without being "preachy" seems to delve into all of our shells and the experiences within and without .
Sex has never been a strong point in any of McCaffrey's books, and it isn't in this one either - but the relationships she builds between her characters are truly remarkable .
I am consistantly amazed at this author's ability to draw the reader into her stories , and build a relationship between reader and the characters .
Although this book is rather short - only 177 pages , the depth of the characters , as well as the story-line , make this an excellent read.
I 'd like to also recommend some of her other work :
