Author's Review
I have read "The Complete Pembroke Welsh Corgi," which this book starts off by distinguishing itself from, and I have read the more generic "Pembroke Welsh Corgis" book by TFH. I found that this book lies right in the middle, and is a good introduction to the breed. Just like an ideal corgi coat, it is not too dense or too fluffy.
The "Complete" book is very dense and goes on and on about the bloodlines of the famous founding sires, and the breed standard, and gets kind of dry. "Pembroke Welsh Corgis" has very little to say about the breed, is mostly a generic form-book about dogs, and its only merit is some cute corgi photos.
However, this is a new kind of book. It is full, and I mean full, of adorable pictures of the cutest dog breed in the world. You get to see newborn corgis, corgis nursing puppies, corgis at home, corgis posing in the ring and the studio for professional photographers, corgis in scent tracking training, herding cattle...you name it. But honestly, the content of the book is really enhanced by seeing so many examples of the dogs as they really are.
The author covers everything - training and showing, breeding, feeding, history - without going too into depth and technicalities to bore or lose the reader, but to give you a good sense of what the breed is like. Most importantly, everything is relevant to corgis. The author is an owner and breeder, and she gives many examples from her own experiences with her dogs. Her writing is easy to read and her style is engaging, not boring.
I received this book as a gift, and it was a nice surprise. I showed it off to a friend who was there when the package from Amazon arrived, and he thought it was adorable. I think that it is a really nice (and cute) addition to a family library, for a hobbyist, a breeder, or someone just interested in learning more about the breed.
