The first book features Lyra Belacqua as the central figure. She...

Where will the needle of the golden compass land?

Date of Review:  Mar 3, 2002
The Bottom Line: Wonderful story, great book and vivid characters and atmosphere.
Review: The Golden Compass is about Lyra Belacqua. A girl who lives among scholars in a college. She and her daemon enjoy such things as climbing on the roof. Her only living relative is her uncle, Lord Asriel who's visit starts a chain reaction of events...

Harry Potter, Aslan, Taran, Dorothy, Frodo, Meet LYRA...

Date of Review:  Jul 2, 2001
The Bottom Line: A new fantasy series for me to add to my favorites: Narnia, Harry Potter, The Book of Three, Lord of the Rings, Oz...
Review: I don't think of myself as a fantasy novel reading kinda guy. Never did the Dungeons and Dragons, or the Sword of Shannara series, or any of the others that would traditionally pigeonhole me in that category of nerddom distinct from my usual niche...

This book is GOLDEN!

Date of Review:  Aug 12, 2000
Review: Philip Pullman wrote a gem in the first book in His Dark Materials series that will keep me reading it over and over again!

~The Golden Compass~ is a story about a young girl named Lyra who is imaginative, brave - and a bit of a liar! This...

Date of Review:  May 25, 2002
The Bottom Line: A fresh idea. This book really has something new. It's amazing. A fantasy world we can relate to.
Review: This is an amazing book! The Golden Compass is the story of a girl named Lyra Belacqua in an alternate dimension not so different than ours? in years passed. I don?t want to give the story away, so let me start by saying Lyra is given an extremely...

Not for children?

Date of Review:  Sep 25, 2007
The Bottom Line: One of the best books I've ever read. You're not left guessing at any details of anything from the plot to the scenery.
Review: I may be a minority for this, but I was a child when I first read this, and I didn't go to bed with nightmares or anything. Think of the movies your kids watch and compare it with this book.

I loved it! I've always loved imaginative stuff...

This is a good book

Date of Review:  Nov 12, 2002
The Bottom Line: It's worth the price.
Review: The Golden Compass is a good book. It has good action scenes but it occasionally moves slowly. I think some of the plot devices it used were extremely implausible and hard to believe. The writing is clear and very easy to read. It is the middle book...

Pullman's Page-Turner

Date of Review:  Aug 5, 2001
The Bottom Line: Concluding this review, I would like to say that you can't say you've read "the best book in the whole wide world!" until you've read this one.
Review: This is one book you will definately want to pick up, one of Pullman's best. You'll notice how it may drag to the point in the beginning but that feeling won't last too long. It's full of surprises, has a breath taking plot and will keep you dieing...

What If God Was One Of Us

Date of Review:  Jan 8, 2008
The Bottom Line: Despite minor setbacks, the true beauty in the trilogy is in the journey of the main characters. In an already saturated genre, Pullman's work is indeed a rare gem.
Review: I read Pullman's Trilogy, "His Dark Materials", as a single epic and found it impossible to review it as three separate works of fiction; And so, I find it most appropriate to write a comprehensive and introductory review of the entire story under...
