The Only Pacifier My Son Will Take
Pros:
Kid loves it, easy to handle, one piece design.
Cons:
A bit more expensive then other pacifiers.
The Bottom Line:
Many hospitals have and use these pacifiers exclusively. There is a clear reason why which is certainly apparent with my newborn. My baby won't take any other pacifier.

Author's Review
The day after my son was born he returned from the nursery to my wife and I with one of these Soothie Newborn Pacifiers in his mouth. With absolutely no experience with newborns or any idea what I was getting into I assumed that my kid would simply suck on anything and any pacifier would sooth him equally.
Nine days later I now realize that apparently not all pacifiers are the same and the money I spent on other "more traditional" style pacifiers was a waste. The First Years Soothie is now the only pacifier that will calm my son.
So since my son gives it a 5 Star Review, I figured I should look into them to offer the daddy perspective.
Pros Based on Logic and Experience
- One piece design molded out of silicone. No chance of a small part breaking off and becoming a choking hazard.
- No latex parts.
- Back of Soothie has a small hole, about the size of my finger. This makes it easy for me to pick it up, give it to my son, and hold it in his mouth until he starts sucking.
- Back of Soothie also has a small tab that sticks out... now sure what this is actually for but I use it to carry the Soothie in my mouth if I have to carry the kid at the same time. Then when I position the kid comfortably on my lap or in the crib I have the Soothie right there with us.
Pros Based on Assumptions
- Since my nine day old can't talk I can only assume that he likes the Soothie because of the larger than usual sucking part.... I would imagine this makes the Soothie more like a human nipple??
Price and Availability
According to diapers.com, the Soothie is used at over 1700 hospitals nationwide, so chances are you can grab a couple of them from your hospital before you leave. An online Google search of "Soothie Pacifier" comes up with about 24,000 results and it is readily available at stores such as Target, Walmart, etc.
Pricing is around $4 - $5 for a two pack, which is comparable to most other name brand pacifiers. Although some other pacifiers, such as Playtex, might be a dollar cheaper, the benefits of the Soothie are definitely worth it.
They are available in Pink, Blue, and Green and sold individually or in packs of two. In addition to the Newborn Soothie, The First Years also makes an "Infant" version and a "Newborn" version so I'll be picking up and reviewing them over the next six months!
