Author's Review
Lil Wayne is an interesting artist. Some people love him for his swagger and his "Best Rapper Alive" attitude, and some people just can't stand him. I don't mind this as long as the artist can make music I enjoy. I have all of his albums except 500 degreez and I downloaded most of his mixtapes except Tha Drought. To tell you the truth I enjoyed Wayne's mixtapes more then his albums until at this point. Tha Carter 2 was exactly what I was looking for. The album is filled with great tracks the shows Wayne's improvement from his previous albums. With that said, I will go through each track explaining each of them.
Tha Mobb
Produced by - Tha Heatmakerz
Production - 9/10
Lyrics - 10/10
Break Down - One of my favorite songs on the whole album. The track uses a sample from "Moment of Truth" by Wilson Turbinton. Easily one of the most lyrical tracks on the album(reminded me of BM J.R from Tha Carter).
Weak Point - Some claim its too long to listen to without a chorus and it just seems as though the track will never end.
Fly In
Produced by - Tmix and Batman
Production - 10/10
Lyrics - 10/10
Break Down - Another amazing beat, this time done by Tmix and Batman. Wayne uses this beat on 3 tracks on this album, Fly In, Carter 2, and Fly out. The track starts out with Wayne talking over a piano-loop, and soon enough the beat comes in and you know its going to be a great track.
Weak Point - Too short
Money On My Mind
Produced by - Tmix and Batman
Production - 9/10
Lyrics - 8/10
Break Down - Another banger, Tmix and Batman does it again on this track. Wayne's lyrics aren't as good as the previous tracks but Wayne still comes hard. The addicting chorus and the beat definetly makes this one of the standout track.
Weak Point - Might get annoying after a few listens mainly due to the chorus, M-M-M-Money on my mind M-M-M-Money on my mind M-M-M-Money on my mind...
Fireman
Produced by - Doe Boys
Production - 5/10
Lyrics - 7/10
Break Down - The first single off the album. This is a good example of "Don't judge an album by its first single" because if you did you would of thought this album is horrible. After a few listens the first thing that came to my mind was that I miss Mannie Fresh. The beat is very annoying and you'll get tired of the track after a few listens. One of the weaker tracks on the album.
Weak Point - Makes you miss Mannie Fresh, very annoying after a few listens you'll get tired of it.
Mo Fire
Produced by - Yonny
Production - 4/10
Lyrics - 2/10
Break Down - I guess this is Wayne's attempt of a Reggae track. This track is straight horrible, I have no idea what Wayne is saying on the track. Worst track on the album, seems enjoyable for the first 2 or 3 listens but it gets very annoying.
Weak Point - Can't understand what Wayne's saying, horrible choice of beat with a crappy chorus.
Best Rapper Alive
Produced by - Big D
Production - 8/10
Lyrics - 9/10
Break Down - Following a skit comes Best Rapper Alive (no pun). Contains a sample from "Fear of the dark" by Stephen Harris. The beat and the chorus is very addicting. Wayne basically talks about being the Best Rapper Alive, according to him he hasn't gotten one bad feed-back on the track.
Weak Point - Track is overplayed imo, Beat gets boring after a while.
Lock and Load (featuring Kurupt)
Produced By - Tmix and Batman
Production - 7/10
Lyrics - 8/10
Break Down - I was expecting a verse from Kurupt so I was a little dissapointed when he only did the chorus. Chorus is very catchy and Wayne spits very nice over a medicore beat. Average track
Weak Point - Beat gets boring after a while, no verse by Kurupt.
Oh No
Produced by - Yonny
Production - 4/10
Lyrics - 8/10
Break Down - This is the same person who produced Mo Fire. Track is boring from beginning to end, mostly because of the very annoying beat. This Yonny dude has got to stop making these crappy beats.
Weak Point - Wack beat, very annoying and very boring
Grown Man (featuring Currency)
Produced by - Tmix and Batman
Production - 9/10
Lyrics - 8/10
Break Down - Very nice beat once again done by Tmix and Batman. Wayne throws a good verse and surprising Currency's verse is pretty nice too. Their voices fit in perfectly on the track and the chorus is very nice.
Weak Point - The part where Wayne starts talking about the sunset is very corny.
Hit Em Up
Procued By - Doe Boys
Production - 9/10
Lyrics - 8/10
Break Down - Very good beat done by the Doe Boys. Wayne's lyrics are nice and his flow is very nice on the track. The chorus is very unoriginal and very corny. Overall the track is good.
Weak Point - Beat is identical to Fly in/Carter 2/Fly Out, Chorus is very corny and unoriginal
Carter 2
Produced by - Tmix and Batman
Production - 10/10
Lyrics - 10/10
Break Down - Same beat as Fly In and Fly out. The lyrics are amazing and the 3 tracks together is my definition of a perfect track. A little short once again but still one of the best tracks on the album.
Weak Point - A little short
Hustler Musik
Produced by - Tmix and Batman
Production - 10/10
Lyrics - 10/10
Break Down - The thrid single off the album. My favorite track on the whole album. The soulful beat and the chorus is beautiful and Wayne's lyrics couldn't of been better on the track.
Weak Point - Nothing
Receipt
Produced by - Tha Heatmakerz
Production - 8/10
Lyrics - 7/10
Break Down - A very similar track to Grown Man and Hustler Musik. The Beat contains a sample of "The Lay Away" written by the Isley Brothers. Track is ok for the most part except Wayne's lyrics fall short on the track.
Weak Point - Wayne's lyrics arent as strong
Shooter
Produced by - Robert Thicke
Production - 9/10
Lyrics - 8/10
Break Down - The fourth single off the album. A very creative and fun track. The track sounds like a session that Wayne and Robert Thicke did together just to have fun. The track is very nice and the chorus by Robert Thicke is very nice.
Weak Point - Nothing really
Weezy Baby (featuring Nikki)
Produced by - Deezle
Production - 7/10
Lyrics - 7/10
Break Down - Very simple beat done by Deezle. The unknown singer Nikki gives a nice and simple chorus while Wayne spits over the beat. His verse' was nothing major, overall the track is medicore.
Weak Point - Beat is too simple, chorus gets annoying, Wayne's verse' isn't so good
I'm a Dboy (featuring Birdman)
Produced by - Tmix and Batman
Production - 8/10
Lyrics - 8/10
Break Down - The beat contains a sample from "Paid In Full" by Eric B. and Rakim. A great party banger with a good beat. Wayne's lyrics are good and he spits very nicely over the sampled beat. Birdman's verse is same as always but it isnt necessarily horrible. Overall a very good party track
Weak Point - nothing major
Feel Me
Produced by - Doe Boys
Production - 7/10
Lyrics - 9/10
Break Down - Produced by the Doe Boys, the beat is very addicting and its a very interesting track. Wayne's lyrics are very nice and the talking between verses is very nicely done.
Weak Point - Beat isnt so great
Get Over (featuring Nikki)
Produced by - Cool and Dre
Production - 9/10
Lyrics - 9/10
Break Down - Produced by Super-Producers Cool and Dre, the track is very cool with the soulful beat. The beat contains a sample from "Love is What we came here for" by Garland Green. Very similar to Huslter Musik, due to Wayne's verse and the overall soulful track. Very well done and definitly one of the standout track
Weak Point - Nothing really
Fly Out
Producued by - Tmix and Batman
Production - 10/10
Lyrics - 10/10
Break Down - Last Track of the album. A great way to end the album, the beat used also for Fly In and Carter 2 is amazing as stated before. Wayne's lyrics are amazing once again and this track ties up the album well-together.
Weak Point - Nothing
After giving the album 2 full listens this album quickly became one of my favorite Wayne albums tied with Tha Block is Hot. The album is very nicely put together and although Mannie Fresh couldnt make it on the album due to the departure from Cash-Money records, the album still stands strong as one of the best of the year. This will be my final purchase of the year and it was worth every penny i paid.
