Product Review

I buy it for the articles

by   mikewhite ,   May 11, 2000

Pros:  articles about t.v. stars' personal lives

Cons:  none

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars
Quality of Gossip: 3/5 stars

Author's Review

I never buy TV Guide for the television listings. It isn't that the magazine doesn't do a good job. The coverage is better and more detailed than in my local paper, but the local newspaper provides good enough coverage for my taste.
No, when I buy TV Guide it is for the insightful articles I can't find anywhere else. The articles tell about the making of my favorite shows, the personal lives of the stars, television coverage of special events like the Super Bowl and coverage of the return to the NFL of the Cleveland Browns. The magazine manages to do all of this without gossip like that found in trashy tabloid newspapers found in the local grocery store.
The latest issue contained a fascinating story about Michael J Fox and his battle with Parkinson's Disease. The story about how the disease has affected his personal, family and professional life was excellent, yet was done in a matter that didn't try to bring pity. The story of his struggle and fight for research is interesting enough without editorializing.
I am not a pop music fan, yet I found the article on rising star Jessica Simpson to be interesting, because she started singing at church camp and still maintains her Christian testimony even with her career on the rise.
If anyone wants to learn more about television, I would recommend TV Guide.
