Product Review

Great game, many aspects of fun!

by   i_m_jones ,   Jun 27, 2005

Pros:  Great control and action sidescrolling levels. Amazing 3D multi-player. Cool touch menus Great replay value

Cons:  Poor selection of 3D 1st person story levels.

The Bottom Line:  Great 1st player story, levels. Wonderful control and fighting system. An exceptional & FAST multiplayer featuring 3D flying several levels, and ships. Good replay value!

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

This game gets a bad rep for being a GBA-plus game. Yes it is true that you get the side scrolling 2d beat-em up levels that are available on the GBA version. And to that note I have to say this- GREAT!

These levels have the playability and control that Ubisoft has come to value and support for the majority of their *good* games ie: Prince of Persia, Beyond Good and Evil, Splinter Cell. The side scrolling part of Sith are mostly left to right, bruiser style game-play with great control of saber attacks (different slashes for different control D pad direction combos) as well as a hearty force ability control function (again with the multi D pad direction attacks) and great defense as you can block, and reflect both lasers and other jedi saber attacks.

With the above possibilities, it becomes easy to pull off such complex and beautiful scenarios as reflecting a shot into a droid, turn and hack down a swinging jedi, turn back (without missing a beat) to throw or choke multiple enemies at the same time, pickup a piece of recently destroyed droid, and whip it back at an oncoming clone, and quickly heal yourself before advancing into the next screen.

Now this is all possible in the GBA version, but while fighting you also buildup a rage-force meter that you can use to excercise one of 4 power moves you learn throughout the game. The GBA version requires a combo attack with the D pad and buttons, but the DS was nice enough to use the touch screen menu to *touch* the move you want (displayed on a powermove menu)for instantaneous power smashing with one finger! This speeds up the melee and makes the user look like a combo king!

I had fun in the 2D game, as for the 3D space flying side....

Bring it on! The 3D engine is surprisingly very powerful, and the box-art and web pics DO NOT do it justice. It looks just as good as the 64 Rogue Squadron minus a bit of detail on the backgrounds. But it is fast, controls great, and the multi-player function is a dream for wireless playablity, but Ill get to that in a second..

3D levels within the game- There are only a handful of flying levels within the game to breakup the 2D side. They are fun, and relatively easy- but they can be boring sidetracks from the story. I would have liked to see more levels, or more than dogfights or flying (do not crash) courses. A boss, or free roam exploration level would have been nice.

Multi-player-!!! YES! This is what I've been looking forward to in gaming. Hi speed, wireless multiplayer death matches AND co-op team play. This is a great feature of this game, and in my own opinion- the feature that makes this game a worthy buy over renting. You can suit up in multiple ships, anything from the M. Falcon, Darth's Tie, Ani's suped up jedi fighter, random bounty vehicles (slave 1 included), and all the regular ships (Ties, X, Y, A, and some random drone/boss ships too) all with varying features and weapons.

One of the coolest parts of the DS version for the flying feature- is the lower touch screen menu is actually your cockpit controls, so you can manually switch your sheilds to the rear of your ship, or toggle map/scoreboard with the touch of a finger. It really adds to the REAL feeling of flying your own ship.

You can enter any combination of 4 human players or AI computer bots- even you vs 3 bots! DM, or team play, what can I say? The levels are diverse, large, almost larger than the GC/64 versions as I remember them.
The game boots up wireless within 5 seconds, and the play is fast, with no bugs, no flicks or slowdown, amazing speed- AMAZING speed.

I loved this, my friend and I were laughing our butts off as we took on Han Solo (you can select certain characters to fight against too!) and got whooped as he flew circles around us for the first couple rounds, then we figured out how to play as a team and it was a blast.

I highly recommend this game for Star Wars fans, bruiser fans, and anyone who likes flying games. Especially for multi-player, if you've been looking for a good handheld game to play with your friends, go fo it!
