No Love for Luv Shack
Date of Review: May 4, 2000
I'm a South Park fanatic. I've been following it since it was a little animated cartoon, eventually branching out into the huge success that it is today. I've got a giant stuffed Cartman doll, South Park shot glasses, South Park magnets, etc, etc. I download episodes. I talk in various character voices to amuse myself. However....
I rented this game a few nights ago from the local Blockbuster, thinking to myself how cute it looked. Trivia and mini-games sounded like a good way to spend my evening. Alas, the game was tossed back into it's container after about 3 games worth, more or less an hour or two.
The Pros:
It's South Park right? How can you not have a permanent smile etched in the corner of your mouth just from looking at your little friends. Question topics from out in left field will have you smiling long before the question comes up.
The mini-games. Though simple, they are hilarious and it's the best part of the game. Play Asses in Space (asteroids), Stampede or Tug-O-War, amongst others.
The Wheel of Fortuitousness. If you're lucky, you get to go to the magic wheel where with one spin you could end up with double your money, less money, a free spin, or maybe even nothing at all.
The Cons:
By game number three I was running into multiple repeat questions.
South Park is notorious for its immense appeal despite poor graphics, but this game was at an all-time disappointing low.
I would've loved to have been able to play nothing but the mini-games, but unfortunately you had to play the game, go through the round of trivia, and then jump into a mini-game. And they picked the game for you without even letting you make a suggestion.
All in all, this game was amusing but I would've expected more from such a booming industry. Acclaim should've been oodles more capable of producing more trivia, more laughs, more sound bytes, better animation and a better price for the average consumer who finds out much too late that they purchased a lemon when they plucked this game off the shelves.
