Author's Review
I received this DVD player as an award from work and I am very pleased with the performance and picture quality from this unit. I have always liked Sony products and have had good performance from each unit I have purchased in the past. However, I have never owned a Sony DVD player before.
I brought this unit home and hooked it up to my 19" LCD TV in our bedroom. I connected to the TV with the component cables supplied with the DVD player. The remote is well laid out and was easily programmed to control the TV. The DVD player quickly loads to the DVD title screen. We rent many movies, some of which are not in the best of shape, yet this player has shown them all flawlessly without a hitch.
I like the "ZOOM" feature to help read some of the credits at the end of the movies (yes, I do read them, to the dismay of my wife). There are two buttons on the remote, "slow play" and "fast play", that I find very amusing. You can actually slow the movie down or speed the movie up without affecting the sound track. After a few seconds you can forget that you are watching a modified version of the movie (except in "fast play" some movements can be quite funny). This is a great feature if you want to watch a 3 hour movie in 2 hours and 20 minutes (which can be a trip in and of itself).
The picture quality is crisp (I am not sure if it because the TV is good, or if the DVD player is good). This player can use progressive scan, which can help to make the picture better for HDTV's, which mine is, but I see no difference when it is on or off.
You can customize the picture to your liking by depressing the "display" button. There are presets, or you can make a custom setting. This can be useful for watch movies in different light settings. The same type of thing can be done with the sound by depressing the "sur" (surround) button or "audio" button. You can digitally change the sound of the movie to mimic surround sound (great if you don't have a surround system), theatrical wide, quiet mode, as well as a customizable setting. I think these are some great features for such an inexpensive unit.
The subtitles are crisp, clear, and unobtrusive as they can be, when used. There is also a button to change viewing "angle", if the DVD is so equipped. I have never run into one of these yet, so I cannot speak to how well this feature works.
All in all, I am very please with this quality-made product and would recommend it to others. I liked it so much I went out and bought one for our living room ($75 well spent).
