Product Review

Scooby Doo and the Mystery of Spooky Island

by   mrsditmer ,   Jul 7, 2002

Pros:  Great live adaptation of the 'real deal'.

Cons:  Belches & farts.

The Bottom Line:  Sccoby Doo will make you laugh till you start splitting at the seams, if you don't then you shouldn't have seen it in the first place.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Scooby Doo
86 Minutes
Rated PG
2002
A Warner Bros. Film

Scooby Doo is just one of those movies that is SO stupid, it is hilarious. If you have EVER enjoyed the cartoon series you will like the movie. If you never really took to Shaggy and Scooby then go see Men in Black II. Now onto some ‘serious’ comedy cretique. (rumor mill says there will be a second movie due in 2004.) The beginning is set is 2 years ago. Here is where you will see a few moments with Pamela Anderson and the fall apart of Mystery Machine Inc. Fred takes all the credit, and the egos of Velma, Fred, and Daphne crumble to pieces. Shaggy and Scooby stay together, but they leave their own way as well.

The movie follows the cartoon series very well, and man does Matthew Lillard do the most amazing impression of the orginal Shaggy I have ever heard. Any ways 2 years later each gets an invitation to Spooky Island to uncover they mystery. They all run into each other at the airport where Scooby is dressed as ‘Grandma’. On the flight there, Mary Jane asks if she could sit with them on the third seat, next to Scooby. Shaggy’s jaw dropped at sight of her. Amazingly she begins to sneeze, “Funny, I am only allergic to dogs.” Okay, my name is Mary Jane and my favorite color is clear. Scooby leaves to sit with Velma and Fred. Mary Jane digs out a baggie filled with Scooby Snacks, and she is eating them. Shaggy and Mary Jane are the 2 peas to the pod, if ever I have seen a more comical match up.

Once they arrive on the island they meet the owner, Emile Mondavarious. A very creepy kind of guy. All of them separate, determined to be the one to solve the mystery. The ’real’ reason Scooby & Shaggy are here is the all you can eat food. Daphne runs into a Voodoo Maestro who is ‘sacrificing’ a chicken that is already dead and de-feathered (pardon the lack of real term there.) Of course they all meet up at the creepy castle that they are told to stay away from. So that is where each went too first. There is a lot more that I am leaving out on purpose, that is so funny, or hysterical, yet well worth seeing for yourself and not read by my writing.

The team does ’join’ forces but not by their choice. And not to divulge the ‘real monster’, I will just say it was the last soul you’d believe it was. The computer generated Scooby and monsters were awesome. Totally believable, man. Like they are all so cool and yet very personable, which you will understand when you see the movie. One little drool factor I will drop is that you WILL see Velma in something other than a sweater. Please see this movie for yourself and take your over 5 kids with you.

Later dudes.

My Final Two-Cents:

If you have ever had the slightest enjoyment out of Hanna/Barbera’s Scooby Doo cartoon series this is a must movie for you to see. If you’re shy about seeing a PG movie as an adult grab your kids or under age 12 relative and be a hero. Take them to see it and save their parents a ‘duty’. My kids were hysterically laughing through a better part of the movie. In my opinion there are no real scary parts but the ‘monsters’. They are very realistic, but they are all computer generated in 2001/2002 not the 70’s era I watched on TV after school. All in all I’d say it is safe for the average youngster. I will be buying this DVD when it comes out. And I am sure that we will be seeing it a lot.
