Author's Review
Dana Carvey will always be remembered as one of the funniest people ever to be in the cast of Saturday Night Live. His impersonations of various people sent people into fits of non-stop laughter. He created memorable characters in Garth of Wayne's World, Hans of Hans and Franz and Church Lady. His style of comedy is one that everyone will laugh at.
After his 6 years on Saturday Night Live, Carvey went onto greater success in movies such as Wayne's World and The Road to Welville. He's even hosting his own show, The Dana Carvey Show, where his style of comedy really shines through his impressions.
But if it weren't for Saturday Night Live, he would've ended up nowhere!
You want a taste of his style of comedy? You can experience all this in Saturday Night Live - The Best of Dana Carvey. This 20 skit DVD shows how funny a comedian Dana Carvey is.

All these videos are HILARIOUS! However, there are quite a few that stand out more than the other ones.
One of these is the first Hans and Franz skit. This is basically a commercial advertising a pre-recorded fantasy date with the two Arnold Schwarzenegger look-alikes. One of the funny parts of this dinner date is when Hans (Dana Carvey) and Franz (Kevin Nealon) start kissing/licking the camera (who, of course, is meant to be the "date") and at the end of the skit, all you can see is the fog created by the two of them. One particularly funny line from this is when Hans says, "You are not eating your food, my liepchien (darling in German; my apologies for the awful spelling). Perhaps you are thinking too much about fondling our muscles (Hans starts fondling his chest)." I've always liked these characters and they never fail to produce a laugh from me.
Another very funny skit is the Pepperboy skit. Carvey is an Italian Pepperman named Marco, who is responsible for grinding pepper on people's food (oh, and by the way, his Italian accent is amazing!). He is getting old, so he's trying to pass on his skills as a Pepperboy to his nephew, Carlos (Adam Sandler, who can't do an Italian accent at all!). So Marco shows Carlos how to grind the pepper and which food to put it on. However, Carlos causes disaster when he first does not give pepper to a customer (Tim Meadows). Instead, he gives him a kiss and runs off (you have to watch the skit to understand why). Another very funny part is when Carlos puts pepper on another customer's (Chris Elliot) chocolate mousse. Things get even worse, when the two are fired at the end. A funny skit from start to finish.
Carvey's impression of Tom Brokaw is flawless. Many people think Chris Parnell's imitation is a lot better than Carvey's, but I am a bit skeptical about that. It's hard to decide which is better. Anyhow, Brokaw has to cover stories before he goes on vacation. In this skit, he has to cover various stories on Gerald Ford's death (in case it happens). The causes of death range from being shot to being eaten by a pack of wolves. When told to use the word "senseless" in a sentence, Brokaw says this:
"Gerald Ford shot dead today at the senseless age of 84".
Brokaw complains about the causes of death being "superfluous". At the end of the skit, Brokaw has to speak in an African dialect used in Zimbabwe, since another cause is that he was attacked in Zimbabwe. This is one of the best I've seen of Carvey.
Carvey's commentary as a Grumpy Old Man is also hilarious. Carvey complains about how everything is "improved". He starts off by saying:
"In my day, we didn't have hairdryers. In my day, if you wanted to dry your hair, you stood outside in a hurricane. And once your hair was dry, you had a piece of wood coming through your head and you looked like a human head kebab, and we liked it! WE LIKED IT!"
He then talks about baldness and sexual protection among other things. Again, another very funny clip and one that never fails to make me laugh.
The Game Show Psychic was also hilarious and produced a lot of laughter. Carvey plays a professional psychic and since he's in a game show, he can predict answers before the question is read. He gets the first few correct, but after a while, the word "meteor" keeps appearing in his head. He does not know why. Because of this, his other opponent (Jan Hooks) is catching up. Carvey still insists on saying meteor. You'll have to see the end of this clip to understand why the word "meteor" kept entering his head (a big meteor falls on top of Hooks at the end of the clip).
The Lost Ending to It's A Wonderful Life is probably the funniest one in the video. The only reason why I find it funny is because I recently watched the movie and after seeing this skit, I could not stop laughing. Basically the ending is extended from the movie. Instead of ending in George Bailey's (Dana Carvey) house with everyone singing Auld Lang Syne, Uncle Billy (Phil Hartmann) finds out that Potter (Jon Lovitz), the bad guy in the original movie, has stolen Bailey's money. As a result, they beat Potter up. The funnier thing is that they find out that Potter is not even a cripple. Then they carry on beating him up. This might be only funny to a strange bunch of people like me, and is not really for everyone, but just watch this skit and you can tell me whether it was funny to you or not.
OH YES, I almost forgot! The Impressions Montage of this DVD is immense! Carvey's various imitations are put into a 4 minute montage. This range from Regis Philbin to George Michael to George Burns to Senator Storm Thurmond to John Travolta and even to Raymond from Rain Man. He does everyone! This will provide enough laughter to last you for a whole day (at least it does for me!).
Other skits worthy of a mention include Il Cantore, The McLaughlin Group and Church Chat Montage. These are exceptionally funny!
Along with these skits are additional features, which include a special Hans and Franz skit and.....wait for it.........Dana Carvey's original SNL audition skit!! Yes, you heard me right! The skit that got Carvey into success!
The audition is "laugh out loud" funny with Carvey doing imitations of Robin Leach (the guy from Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous), Denis Miller, Robin Williams and Jimmy Stewart. By the time I watch this, I'm lying on the floor in pain, crying because of the humor throughout this whole DVD!
The DVD also features information about the skits in the DVD. It provides one with all the exact dates of the skits (month/date/year).
Would I recommend this DVD? HELL YEAH! This should be watched by anyone who wants a good laugh!
