Author's Review
I was looking for a low cost, yet effective, way play a huge collection of MP3's on my home theater system. So I picked up a Sansa E270 (6GB) for $45 shipped. Next then was to find a way to connect this to my home theater. I had looked at several options but decided to order the SanDisk Sansa Base Station for Sansa.
First impressions, it looks nice. More importantly, it does exactly what it is supposed to do and it does it well. Set-up took less than a couple of minutes, don't even bother to refer to the instruction manual as it's that simple.
What drew me towards this unit was the price (under $50) and remote. While the remote offers few frills, it is quite easy to use and controls all aspects of the Sansa player, including volume level, while docked.
Here's what I liked about this docking station:
1. It sounds great. With built in amplifier this really cranks out the sound very clearly. If you've ever connected you MP3 directly to your stereo then you know how inconvenient it is to have to turn up the volume on both devices just to get decent output.
2. It charges your Sansa while plugged in.
3. The remote is very easy to use, providing full functionality of your Sansa while docked. The remote also operates easily at 20-25 feet (the max I have in my space). The base also has a spot to store your remote when not in use.
4. The base is weighted and slip resitant. Includes rear connections so you can easily route the cords to be out of sight.
5. Connections are wired. While wireless would be ideal for some, I find that wireless options usually bring a lot of pop, hiss and other interference. The connections are standard RCA audio cables for direct connection to your receiver.
What don't I like? Well the single complaint I have is that the power cord doesn't connect firmly to the base and can become disconnected if you move the base. The engineers should have caught this and easily resolved that problem. Also would be nice to have some display on the remote (current song perhaps), but no in this price range I'd suspect.
Overall I feel this is a great product for the price. Does what it's supposed to, does it well and looks very cool.
