Product Review

Samsung’s 87S and 89S DLP sets with LED lighting have definite advantages over other technologies.

by   scain ,   Feb 25, 2008

Pros:  Best combination of picture quality and affordability amongst large 1080p sets plus low power consumption.

Cons:  Typical rear-projection cons: can’t wall mount and limited viewing angle. Hard to find.

The Bottom Line:  Best large 1080p TV for the money. Picture quality, low power consumption, and 3 HDMI 1.3 inputs make this the TV to get if you don't need wall mount.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

If you can get one, picture quality is quite good, save for the limited viewing angle (typical for rear projection). Three HDMI inputs is nice, with the slightly pricier 89S series supporting version 1.3 versus HDMI version 1.1 on the 87S series. The thin framing around the screen lets you fit the most screen in your space. Samsung’s LED light engine lasts the life of the set, eliminates rainbows, and gives these DLP sets very modest electricity consumption for the size. No large high-def TV can truly be considered “green,” but if you care about the environment or just want to keep your electric bill down, these LED DLP Samsungs are the way to go. I can’t think of any downsides to this TV. A really good 1080p Plasma or high-end LCD might match or slightly better the Samsung DLP’s excellent picture, but you’ll pay many hundreds more up front and then you’ll get hit with a higher electric bill each month. If you don’t have an unlimited budget, you don’t need wall mount, and you can live with the viewing angle, it’s hard to beat these 87S and 89S series Samsung LED DLPs. You just have to find a place that actually has one.
