A New Old Friend
Date of Review: Jul 4, 2000
Today I sat back in my favorite chair and introduced myself to a new friend, the Saint Luis Rey: Vendome. My first impression was of a beautifully wrapped, well constructed cigar. I fail to understand, how, given an option such as this, any one would choose to smoke a "Stogie". These cigars are made at the Romeo Y Julieta Factory and show the quality in their wrapper.
As I settle into my chair and this cigar, the ash grows and so does my appreciation for this fine cigar. Inhaling slowly, I am enthralled by the grey-white ash which will grow to about one and a half to two inches. I enjoy knowing that the white color to the ash is indicative of quality soil. Cigar making is such a natural process, and I think of all the hands which have touched this cigar on its way to me.
This cigar begins quite mild and light, but gains intensity quickly. As I get to know my new friend more, his character grows deeper and more complex. Twenty-five minutes into this smoke and I decide this will be a friend I visit often.
I am generally a smoker of maduros, and yet am impressed with my new friend's subtleness. There is no absence of flavor only what I would call a mildness of flavor. An almost sweet earthiness, that is perfect for the first cigar of the day. As the end draws near, I look forward to visiting with this friend again, as I have enjoyed the last hour with him. I am not yet considered an expert on cigars, and may never be, but I do know what I like. I believe this will be a friend which I will keep on my smoke list.
This cigar lit well, burned evenly, kept me satisfied, and ended on a pleasant note. What more could one ask for in a friend.
