Author's Review
I recently bought this from SamAsh during a Clearance sale at Guitar Center. I basically told SA that GC was offering this for $100 less which of course SA would match.
I was also informed that they had an even better deal "in the back". Which they always do. But to my surprise, they weren't kidding. They had a special TD3X with all mesh heads!!! Basically the same as the TD3, same brain same cymbals, replacing all the rubber pads with mesh. I quickly snatched this up along with an extra ride cymbal, double bass pedal and pearl drum throne all just shy of $1,800!!!
After about a month or two with this kit, I'm still extremely happy. My only gripes are:
1) Brain only has 32 kits
2) Sounds are not interchangeable. For example, I can't customize a kit and make one of the cymbals a cowbell, or a hand clap. Plenty of sounds, but they're all restricted to one particular kit.
3) No way to lock hi hat in halfway position like a real hi hat.
Some positives:
1) Durable
2) Reliable company, arguably the best.
3) You can choke cymbals
4) Great sound
5) Can mix play with ipods (has input for this)
6) Flexible set up as far as placement for pads and cymbals
I see myself eventually upgrading the brain to the TD6 but my fiance would kill me if I were to spend another 5 bills!!! I'll have to wait a few years when it comes down to maybe half that. Overall, a great kit for beginners or semi-pros.
