Author's Review
I have been a HUGE car audio fanatic for the last ten years. Ever since I was capable of driving, I have had a desire to blast my speakers at levels that werent fit for anyones ears. This has led to thousands of dollars in purchases, countless maxed out credit cards, and eventually led to a huge interest in the car customization business in general.
Over the last ten years, I have done countless installs on my own vehicles, my friends vehicles, and customer vehicles after I started up my own customization business in 2000, which eventually would be put out of business, by the economy crushing September 11th. Porous
Since the time September 11th, I have still maintained a great deal of side business, including work done for a local shop on a need basis. I now perform the majority of my installations as more of a hobbyist than for income. This affords me the opportunity to try out the latest equipment and improve the car customization scene within the state of Alaska.
Rockford Fosgate Punch P2D210 Sound Quality
I am pretty certain that it doesn't matter what Rockford subwoofer you purchase, you are going to know that you will have a quality product. This is especially true when it comes to the overall sound of the subwoofer. There are numerous other subs out there on the market that are considerably less expensive than the Rockford subs, however their sound quality is nowhere near as crisp as a Rockford sub and that is where Rockford truly stands out.
If you are looking for an incredibly crisp sound, these subs are an excellent choice. Each and every beat hits hard, but at the same time have little vibration to deter you from enjoying every bit of your music. When you go for an aftermarket system, you are doing it because you expect something more than you get with your factory sound. So if that is the case, you should consider the clarity of the speakers. If you are doing this, then you'll notice a major different in this sub when you compare it to speakers from Pioneer, Lanzar, Sony, MTX, and the rest of the line of competitors.
Another great thing about this sub is that it can handle rapid beat clarity. Many subs will simple roll the beats together when they are in rapid succession, however the response rate on this Rockford sub is incredible and can keep up with even the fastest bass hits, giving you crisp individual beats rather than a slur of confusing bass.
Durability
If you can wreck a Rockford sub then you are doing something horribly wrong. These are the most solid subs on the market. I have seen these subs in cars for numerous years without issue, especially this particular model. I am pretty sure that even if you were purposely attempting to blow this sub you would have a hard time doing it unless you weren't providing adequate air cooling.
Another great thing about this sub is that I have noticed no gradual decline in performance as the sub stretches/warps with use. The subs still hit just as hard from day 1 to year 3. As long as the owner takes care of these subs, there should easily be several good years out of these subs without any issues. Many times amps are replaced multiple times before these subs ever need to be replaced.
Appearance
While the majority of Rockford subs are incredibly stylish, this particular model lacks in that department. The sub itself still has a great look to it, however since it isn't one of the more expensives lines from Rockford, it really has nothing special added to it. It has a really basic black look to it. However, with the Rockford name printed prominently on the front of the sub, you really can't go wrong. When people see the name, they know that you went with performance and power over simple looks alone.
Setup
While there are numerous ways that you can setup these subs, I would personally recommend a ported box with 1.4 cu/ft. While many would suggest a single port on the box, I would suggest running two subs in a single box each angled in different directions. Now, take a port approximately 2-3" in diameter and run it through the box. Make sure that you surround the port, which I hope you would use a hard plastic, or a non tinny sounding metal. Coat this material with a sound deadener. This will remove some of the vibration from the sub. Now add a foam or preferably a rubber jacket around the material. Once you have done that you should spray it with sound deadener and affix to the box. This will help to remove some of the issues with vibration, but the addition of the two ports over one larger port should also provide for a louder sound. If you take the ports and use a metal with plastic coat or rubber coat, you should be able to amplify the sound, much like you would with an exhaust setup, however you would have to use something resembling a funnel. Remember in school where you would make a funnel with paper and you yell into a smaller side and when it came out a much bigger side it sounded louder. If you use the same method for your port you can amplify your sound and create something that is somewhat throatier than it normally would be.
For a wooden enclosure consider the type of wood that you are using. While many people choose some sort of MDF, I typically stray away from it. While this means you will have a heavier, more expensive box, it also means that you will have something that is solid and less likely to vibrate. When you assemble the box, use both glue and nails. Then use a sealant in order to seal off the gaps. This is the best means of promoting high sound without vibration.
Once you are done, ensure that you place Dynamat or a similar product all around the inside of your truck to ensure that you don't have vibration. Make sure to include the license plate. Once you have done all of this, you should notice a much improved sound from your vehicle setup.
