Author's Review

I first played Road Rash on my brother's Sega system. My husband and I became very addicted to the game, constantly battling each other to win races and be number one.

Road Rash is a racing game, where you race on motorcycles. There's a twist though, you get to hit your opponents. You can hit them with a variety of things: your fist, kick them, or you can use weapons such as clubs, bats, crowbars, chains, pipes, and more. Newly added to the Nintendo 64 version are other goodies like spray paint. I think the best part of the game is trying to knock your opponents off their bike, rather than the racing.

The main point of Road Rash is to win as many races as possible to earn money and advance to higher levels. The higher place you win, the more money you get. You can also get money from knocking other racers off their bikes. You save your money to purchase faster and better bikes to use. It's exciting to look at all the bikes available for purchase and decide on the one you want to buy.

In order to advance to the next level, you need to qualify for all the races in that level. Usually there are around 6 to 8 races per level. You need to finish 4th place or higher in order to qualify. Once you qualify on all the races, you then proceed to the next level.

While your racing you will run into other bikers, who will attempt to do anything possible to knock you off your bike. You need to be careful, and prepared. There are also police in this game who will chase you down and try to knock you off your bike. If they succeed in knocking you off your bike, you automatically get a ticket and get disqualified from the race. If you knock the police officer off their bike, you get extra points.

A new feature added to this version over the old Sega version, is that you can join biker gangs to be a part of. Once you join one of these gangs, they will aid you in winning by helping you knock members of other gangs off their bikes.

You can choose different types of games to play, and can also play with other people. One of the new games added is Ped Hunt, in which you race and attempt to run over pedestrians standing in the middle of the road and off to the side.

Road Rash is a fun, addictive game. The only problems I've seen with it is that it may not be suitable for younger kids, it's violent, and you get a sore thumb from holding the controller for so long.
