Suspenseful Love Story

Rebecca is a wonderful story about a women who is haunted by her husband’s dead wife. The new wife, whose name is never revealed, feels that she is constantly competing with Rebecca. She feels that to her husband’s family she can never live up to the expectations that are placed upon her. In addition to this weight, the housekeeper is trying to frighten the new wife away. Joan Fontaine does a remarkable job as the shy, naïve, young wife. The viewers are quickly taken into her character, and are able to feel her love and her fears. As Mrs. DeWinter learns about her husband’s past, the viewers see Fontaine visually change as she matures. In addition, since the story is filmed from the second wife’s point of view, we get to guess about what really happened, along with her. Hitchcock uses all his skill in suspense to keep everyone in the dark and wanting more.
