Author's Review
I purchased two Flip Ultra's, one for myself and one for my daughter, prior to my daughters 10th birthday and her first visit to Disneyland. We spent four days at the park and I was able to record all of the "First Time" events you would imagine would take place.
This is a great little camera, very lightweight, and easy to use. Video resolution is excellent. I use my daughters hair to check for resolution and this camera has no problem resolving her hair structure.
What is really outstanding is the cameras low-light capability. We had her 10th birthday dinner at the Blue Bayou Restaurant in the Pirates of the Carribean ride. This is a candlelit environment and I was able to record everything. Her dessert was the chocolate chip cake ala mode drizzled with chocolate and caramel syrup. In this environment the camera could clearly resolve the difference in color between the chocolate and the caramel. Fantastic!!
The size, weight, and shape of the camera easily allowed me to record over my shoulder my wife and daughter as she rode the rides for the first time. This included the Pirates of the Carribean ride which is a low-light ride.
The camera controls are easy to understand and most users will not need to refer to the users manual except maybe to find out where to put the batteries.
And speaking about batteries, Pure Digital really had their act together when they designed this camera to use plain old AA batteries. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! This worked out great when after one ride the batteries died. I had spares with me but even if I didn't, I can get AA's anywhere. Also, use lithium batteries. They last alot longer and weigh substantially less.
Although this is a video camera, you can easily extract a single frame as a jpeg and save it to your pictures file in your computer by way of the usb port that flips out of the side of the camera. However I recommend that you do not plug the camera directly into the computer. It will work but it just seems that the weight of the camera is too much for the usb connector. I use the jumper cable included with the camera.
The tag line for the camera is "What will you see today?" and to that end I carry this camera with me on my belt everywhere I go. I document everything, swim meets, birthday parties, pinball conventions, hikes, etc.
The only downside, if you can call it that, is that I now have to buy an external hard drive since my C drive is now quite full but that is a minor thing.
I am not one to rave about a product but this one really deserves the rave reviews and I show it off to all of my family, friends, and customers.
Although the camera holds only 1 hour of video, 1 hour is a really long time. On our trip, every night I would download the video to the laptop and not once did I fill the camera even though I was able to document the whole trip.
