Author's Review
For the most part, video game designers have a hard time making games specifically for little kids. Aside from getting the appropriate souce material, they have to figure out what the point of the whole game is. Granted that there aren't exactly many sources to look upon for a game aimed at little kids but all of the attempts to create such a game have come off rather well. Where's Waldo, for example, followed the goal of the book series. Sesame Street asked players to identify letter and numbers. Even Barney asked that players find an animal or a shape to help them go further in their quest. However, when it comes to the Teletubbies, there is no one real goal here. It seems as if the programmers just slapped some voices and characters together and forgot to make a game out of it.
Graphics - For a powerful video game system such as the PlayStation, the graphics are horrid. Granted, you can tell exactly which Teletubbie you are controlling but it didn't help that the colors on said characters are too bright. It also doesn't help that there is no sense of depth between the hills. Since you can move in all directions, this aspect is important to have. About the only good thing to be said about this area of the game is that it looks exactly lik the TV show: bright and cheerful colors everywhere.
Sound - If there's anything that can be a bight spot for the game, it's the sound. Very clear, crisp, and abunant here. The narrator's voice as well as the voices of the Teletubbies are crystal clear and are present in everything that you do. It evokes a sense of interactivity between character on screen and player, which is something little kids can appreciate.
Gameplay - First off, the good news. The controls here are actually quite good. Each button you hit does an action such as examining an item or greeting a fellow Teletubbie. The controls don't lag and feel quite responsive. Now for the bad news. There is no real goal to this game whatsoever. The game is mostly composed of pointless events that happen once you examine an item. Case in point: you examine a flower. it then takes you to a scenario where you find a drum. You hit the drum and flowers appear. Hit it again and clouds appear. One more time and more flowers appear. Then after another hit your friends appear. More hits place everything in random locations until finally everything disappears. There was no point in that whatsoever. If you were to give this to a child to teach them how to play a video game in the future, then that child will have no idea why people play games in the first place. It's not a game without a goal.
Bottom line: The game may be aimed for little kids, but even little kids don't get it. I watched as kids went to play this game only to leave 5 minutes later wondering why it was ever made. The fact that it averages for about $30 makes it obvoius that the designers went for the quick buck here. Do yourself a favor and spend the money on more worth things.
