It Took Five Tries to Find a DVD Player That Plays All Formats

Date of Review:  Jun 17, 2006
The Bottom Line: This is a great DVD player for non-technophiles who just want a good-looking player that reads a ton of formats (including dual-layer discs) with good image and sound quality.
Review: Even though we rarely watch DVDs, we ve gone through five* (hubby had to replace his PS2 once) different players over the past five or so years. My husband initially dragged me into the DVD world by buying a PlayStation 2 and persuading me that we d...

brad's Experience

Date of Review:  Apr 20, 2006
The Bottom Line: Buy this player for your home audio/video setup while you wait for the HDTV/HD movies situation to develop. And that should be a good 24 months or more.
Review: The absolute current model number of this player is: Phillips DVP642/37.

Take this from a guy who has run through nearly a dozen DVD players. This includes one MS Xbox used as DVD player, because prior to getting that thing, I couldn't...

Philips DVP642 DVD Player - Plays PAL and DivX, But Otherwise Flawed

Date of Review:  Feb 17, 2006
The Bottom Line: If you need to play PAL discs on an NTSC TV, play computer files and DivX, the DVP642 is a good choice. If you want an inexpensive DVD player that...
Review: After one of my DVD players (a Panasonic DVD player) died with a dreaded HO2 error, I managed to temporarily revive it by opening the case and manually spinning the disc once. It had worked for a week after that, but all reports online pointed to...

Slim progressive DIVX

Date of Review:  Apr 7, 2006
The Bottom Line: A nice little player at a very nice price. With DIVX playback and progressive scan all for $55, I can't help but recommend it.
Review: A few weeks ago I needed a new DVD player in a major way. Believe it or not I had been using my Xbox as my primary DVD player in the living room for a couple of years now (I know it's a horrible player and I had quite a few problems with it), but I...

Yippee - A DVD Player That Does Play All!

Date of Review:  Oct 17, 2004
The Bottom Line: Philips DVP642 Divx progressive scan DVD player's features and recognized formats are incredible - more bang for the buck. The low price won't break your budget. Firmware and codes availability.
Review: Oh No, old DVD Player is Toast!
The little one wanted to watch her favorite cartoons that had been compiled onto a CDR as the VHS tape busted a long time back. They were safely saved on backup. The little Apex player that could, could not any...

A Pirate's Dream - But So-So for the rest of us

Date of Review:  Oct 19, 2005
The Bottom Line: Not a particularly notable DVD player if it weren't for the unique ability to play computer files, buy only if you desire that functionality.
Review: UPDATE! - Unit since returned due to A/V sync issue

How is this player unique?

In a world where DVD players are a dime-a-dozen manufacturers are endlessly creating features to attempt to set their players apart. Recorders are...

If you're from Europe, this player is a real PAL.

Date of Review:  Jan 4, 2005
The Bottom Line: It plays almost every video format, all regions, PAL and NTSC DVDs. It's firmware-upgradeable too. Replace all your players with this Philips unit - you won't regret it.
Review: I'll start this review by saying that neither of my DVD players had anything wrong with them, but a friend of mine recommended this Philips unit for one reason. We're displaced Brits living in America, and he told me this unit would play PAL DVDs...

Affordable and plays almost everything you have!

Date of Review:  Aug 20, 2004
The Bottom Line: If you're in the market for a DVD player or another one that can play DiVX, this is it. It has nearly all the features you'll ever need.
Review: I bought this player from J and R online a few months ago. It was hard getting my hands on it because Target and Amazon were selling out everytime they got a new shipment. I heard SO many good things about this player from online forums and since I...

A player that is "format-support" rich.

Date of Review:  Dec 15, 2004
The Bottom Line: it's great player that will become your central piece of audio/video source.
Review: Applause to the engineers at Philips for getting this dvd player right and at a very very good price. This player is very well designed; it is for both the geeks who like to hack the machines and the casual everyday users. Since many reviews here...

This amazing machine routinely plays "problem" discs that would choke most other DVD players!

Date of Review:  Feb 3, 2006
The Bottom Line: I'm very satisfied with this player, which reads some problematic discs that won't even load via my costlier Toshiba player. Albeit several remote keys take getting used to, it's easy-to-operate.

UPDATE INSERTED HERE: I've enjoyed this uniquely "tolerant" DVD player so much that yesterday (October 11, 2006) I bought myself a SECOND such unit to be used down in the basement. I discovered that Best Buy no longer carries it, but...
