Product Review

General Info on the Palm m105

by   gctf ,   Apr 8, 2001

Pros:  More features, light weight, non shatter screen, comes with "Note pad"

Cons:  Smaller screen size

The Bottom Line:  Best features of all the Palm hand helds, yet at a better price compared to the older models. Has all the old features and more. Check it out!

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

Since the M105 is a replacement model for the Palm IIIxe, obviously, it is made with better functions and features than the Palm IIIxe.

The most significant difference is the shape. The M105 has a rounded bottom which fits nicer on your hand than the IIIxe. The other thing about the new shape design is that it fits more tightly on the hot-sync pad and will not fall off if moved like the Palm III. Also, the cover of the M105 has a small clear plastic window. This window allows you to press the UP button and see the date and time without having to turn the whole thing on, thus saving you the time and power.

Where the Palm III has the "Memo Pad", the Palm M105 has the "Note Pad". The difference? With the memo pad, you can only enter data by writing it with graffiti on the graffiti writing area. This is quite time consuming and quite annoying when you want to take a quick note. With the "Note Pad" however, you can take you stylus and actually write in your own writing whatever you want as if you were holding pen and paper. This allows for much quicker notes and you can write in whatever, even draw in pictures if you want. The best part, is that both of these are included with the purchase!

Some people complain about the size of the screen on the M105. Some people are very picky and since the screen size is a bit smaller, they refuse to buy it. Well, here's my take on it. If you don't have really bad eye sight, the slightly smaller screen size won't kill you. In fact, since they use the same number of pixels but condensed into a smaller area, the pixels are closer together giving you a clearer, crisper image! So it's even better than the larger screen of the Palm III!

Speaking of screen, here's something worth considering. All the previous models of Palm up to the M-series are have a glass screen. This screen has been known to shatter in the weirdest ways. Whether you drop it by accident, or you walk into a table corner with it in your pocket... or whether you threw it at a rat, the screen will shatter. With the new M-series Palms, they've replaced the glass screen with a plastic non-shatter screen which is great comfort to those who are prone to dropping their Palms. If you're afraid of cracking the screen accidentally, secure you comfort with the M105.

The M105 is a better buy than the M100 in that it has 8MB of memory as opposed to the 2MB of memory on the M100. The extra 6MB can take you a long way!

If you're contemplating getting a Palm, I highly recommend the new M105. Comparing all the new features against the older models, this one comes out top. And it's not pricy at all.
