Author's Review
I am a Marine, so I lead an active lifestyle. I have destroyed a few cameras, as have friends of mine. I wanted to get a new camera, and I wanted to get something that could stand up to what I want it for, but I didn't want to give up having a quality camera. My last compact digital camera was a Cannon- I loved it, but it ended up with a destroyed screen because it got crushed. I had been putting off getting a new camera for fear that I would break another camera. I finally decided to go out for a new camera, but didn't know what I wanted.
I have known for years that Olympus is a amazing camera brand. I have always admired the brand, but have never purchased one before because they don't use SD cards. I have a general belief that I should only purchase products that use SD cards, because I don't want a while lot of different cards. I finally broke down to the Olympus when I started looking at the Shock and Waterproof cameras. They look to be more capable of standing up to the beating my activities will throw on the device.
The Stylus 850SW provides 5 foot shock proofing. The screen on the camera has a built in hard cover to the screen which means that I pretty much can't crush the screen. THe camera has stood up well so far to being tossed around.
The waterproofing, for me, is an added bonus. It is water proof to 10 feet, which means that I am not going out scuba diving with it (atleast, not without a case for it), but it has been good for the pool, beach, and water park. It would also be great for snorkeling!!!
The name does not imply this, but the Stylus 850SW is also freeze proof. The freeze proofing makes this camera ideal for skiiers and snowboarders, as well as anyone that likes frozen activities.
This camera is great for active lifestyles. The camera takes great pictures as far as light and balance. The camera allows for exposure adjustment and panoramic settings. With 8 megapixels, you can make huge prints, but you also have the option to reduce the quality. I love this camera as much as I loved my Cannon and for compact cameras-this is one that I am content carrying in lieu of my Nikon SLR!
This camera takes the xD card, but also comes with an adapter so that you can ue micro SD cards, which is nice for an SD fanatic like me!
Overall, this is a great camera!
