Do you have a spare HP 12A Toner Cartridge ready?
Date of Review: Sep 10, 2009
The Bottom Line: Buying the HP Q2612A toner cartridge is great deal because you get the quality of HP along with their bonus programs that simply make life better.
The HP LaserJet 12A Toner Cartridge is my product of choice when my little LaserJet 1010 runs out of ink. The inside of the LaserJet 1010 is clean after years of use and always seems to print what I need when I need it because of the quality of this product. I will admit that I shake the toner cartridge to get all the ink out before replacing it. However, when the time comes for replacement, I follow the instructions below and have yet to make a mistake!
Replacing The Toner Cartridge In A LaserJet 1010 Printer
Putting a new toner cartridge in your HP LaserJet 1010 printer is a simple task that people of almost any age can do by themselves. To prevent damage to your new cartridge, do not expose the HP12A to direct light. Cover it with a piece of aluminum foil, heavy plastic or paper.
First, turn off the LaserJet 1010 printer.
Now, open the print cartridge door located at the top front of your printer and remove the old print cartridge by grabbing the molded black exterior, pulling slowly.
Remove the new print cartridge from the packaging, and gently shake it from side to side to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge.
Pull the tab with a liberal amount of force until all the tape is removed from the print cartridge. Put the tab in the print cartridge box to return for recycling.
Carefully, insert the new toner cartridge in the printer, making sure that the toner cartridge is in position but ensuring that you do not damage any internal plastic parts. Close the print cartridge door.
If toner gets on your clothing during this process, wipe it off with a dry cloth and wash the clothing in cold water. Hot water will set the toner into the fabric of your clothing.
How Can You Get 2,000 Pages Or More Out Of Your HP LaserJet 1010 Printer?
Some of the most common questions that I used to get from coworkers and clients was how to reduce toner costs in their business organization.
One way is to set your printer to EconoMode, in this mode the printer uses less toner on each page. Selecting this option will extend the life of the print cartridge and reduce your cost per page, but it will reduce overall print quality by making a lighter image on the paper.
Using Windows XP Home or Professional, perform the following steps to ensure lower toner usage: Access the printer preferences on the printer driver. Now, select Paper/Quality tab or the Finishing tab and select the EconoMode checkbox. Once this is done, hit the Ok button to apply the settings.
I suggest printing a test page to make sure you are ok with these settings. Some people the text quality is to low and want to return to the old settings.

HP PurchasEdge
An innovative program, the PurchasEdge allows you to earn points for purchasing HP supplies. To save time, you HP wholesaler can automatically submit your invoices to HP for you so the points will be automatically tabulated. You gain on point for every $4 USD spent on over 1,400 qualifying HP supplies. The points can be redeemed on dozens of HP products. I used my points to redeem a free, large format inkjet printer that would normally cost $1,800.
HP Planet Partners Recycling Program
HP placed a small gift inside your toner cartridge box, a return shipping label. You can return used cartridges to HP with the supplied shipping label. In 1997, HP started accepting inkjet printer cartridges for recycling. Today over 76 million inkjet and laser toner cartridges have been recycled world-wide! Returned supplies are sorted and shredded. Plastics and metals from these cartridges have been used in new products such as clothes hangers, auto body parts, fence posts, roof tiles, shoe soles and serving trays. No HP print cartridges returned through the Planet Partners program are sent to the landfill. The HP supplies recycling initiative is not only environmentally friendly but also economically responsible because the HP PurchasEdge rewards program is tied to the whole process through additional point incentives.
Summary
I have never had an issue with the Hewlett Packard 12A toner cartridge. From my experience, I can usually get a yield of 2100 pages out of my toner cartridge using a HP LaserJet 1010.
The title of this review sums up my position on toner cartridges. I always buy an extra toner cartridge with every new printer and create a list of the reoccurring inventory needs of my business. I submit the list to vendors or simply shop ahead of the need to find the best deals.
Economic times are already tough enough without having the need to buy expensive toner cartridges once you run out. Take the time now to get a handle on your situation and you will wind up saving thousands of dollars every year.
