Twice the playpen
Date of Review: Jan 11, 2004
The Bottom Line: What would I do without it?
My 15 month old son is too big for an infant swing or bouncy seat, and too mobile for a traditional playpen. Though, being only 15 months old, I cannot allow him to crawl around the house at the risk that he would find the one item that is not childproofed to perfection. I fretting about leaving him alone for more than a moment, though dreaded his screams and cries when left in his playpen. He needed more room. After much research I found this play yard and have been delighted with it since.
The Superyard XT stands about 26" tall, and allows approximately 18.5 sq. ft. of room for one, or more, children to play. The structure is durable plastic made into six separate gates that connect. Where each gate connects, the joint allows for movement in either direction so that the Superyard XT can be manipulated to fit different shaped rooms or areas within a room. When not in use, it can be disconnected on one side and folded into an accordion for easy storage. When collapsed, it can fit in a closet, under a crib or bed, or simply against a wall.
I am confident when leaving my son in the Superyard XT that he will not maneuver himself out of it, or injure himself on any of the joints or gates. He is pleased being inside with toys, and seems content that he can still move around without much restriction. I have read a few complaints regarding a child being able to push the entire yard around a room, though have not personally experienced that for myself. Though, if that should occur, I am confident that the Superyard XT will still inhibit my son from injuring himself, since the sides are so tall.
I purchased the yard for $60.00, and have not regretted it for a moment. For the future, there is a separate kit available to expand the size of the yard. This is something that I will certainly consider as my son grows, especially since the extension kit costs a mere $20.00 for expanded space for my son.
I had no difficulty setting up the Superyard XT and have not had any complaints from friends are family who have used it while caring for my son. Each person who has borrowed it has commented on it's sturdiness and convenience. Also, each mother-friend of mine who has borrowed this play yard has purchased one for her own children.
Of all of the products that I've purchased in regard to my son and his pleasure and safety, this is the one I am most proud of. I do, however, have one complaint regarding this particular product. When transporting the Superyard XT from one home to another, it can be cumbersome. If I hadn't a van, it would be nearly impossible to take with me. Be considerate of this when thinking of the Superyard XT. Though, I've no other warnings to any future or potential consumers. It is a well-made and well-thought product.
