First I should confess, Im a gadget dork!! If it has a power button, a manual that is infinitely complicated and requires more effort to actually use it than a standard conventional method
.I MUST HAVE IT!! I purchased my Nokia N800 about a year ago as an upgrade to my Nokia N770. The N770 is a great machine, but you had to be pretty techy to get much use out of it. The release of the N800 provided several upgrades in the operating system that make it much more user friendly and the operating system tremendously more stable. Nokia has also just released (12-20-07) a new version of the operating system, OS2008. As with any new operating system there are not as many programs for the new version available, but the benefits you get are worth the switch. Internet surfing on the new OS is blazing fast!!! When hooked through my home Wi-Fi it will load most web pages as fast as my laptop. You can also access the internet by pairing the N800 with your cell phone via Bluetooth. Your cell needs to have internet access and you need to check with your provider to make sure they do not lock the internet access being used in this way from your phone: they dont want you using your cell phone as a modem, they want to sell you one of those as well. T-Mobile works great; I have been using their high speed Edge service for a couple of years. One quick point, you cannot pair the N800 with a Blackberry for Internet access
no clue why it doesnt work, Ive tried several Blackberry models with no success. The Internet provided through the N800 works on almost any web site, I have run into a couple of issues with Java applications on some sites but you can watch YouTube videos till your eyes bleed.
The coolest thing you can do with your N800 is turn it into an MP3 player with the same functions as the new IPod touch. There are two programs you can download **FOR FREE** (gotta love Linux ) that give your N800 the same finger scrolling access with album cover pics. It is awesome!!! The volume is not a loud as the IPod (yes, I have one
its a sickness really) but if you dont need to crank it up to 11 you will be OK.
You also get an email client which can be used like a stripped down version of Outlook, a PDF viewer and downloadable software for opening/editing Word & Excel documents. This is my FAVORITE gadget to take with me when I travel, it does almost everything needed. There are 2 SmartCard slots which can each hold up to a 8 Gig card, with 1 Gig of internal provided you can have up to 17Gigs of storage!
There is a new model out the N810, which offers a slide out keyboard and built in GPS. I have read the new GPS is not very accurate, hopefully it will be fixed with a software upgrade. Also they have reduced the size of the memory card the N810 will accept. Im sure this will be fixed with a software upgrade like they previously did with the N800.
To sum this up the N800 is a GREAT product, my wife even likes it which is huge because she usually wants to crush my stupid little toys. Plus with the release of the N810 you can get the N800 for a little over $200 if you look around.
