D100 a practical use

Date of Review: Jun 8, 2004

The Bottom Line:  At pricing, worth a look Vs the D70. Md-100 attachment a great feature, fit and feel in hand is great, pictures are good to excellent, though D70 outperforms sometimes.
I traded in all of my old SLR's and twin lens reflex camera bodies, associated lens, etc. The Nikon D100 was the replacement back on Dec 2002. I have used it for thousands of shots and am very pleased with it's performance to date.

I am not a professional but used to shoot an extraordinary amount of photos when younger and studied the art, through class room and practical experience.

I am very pleased with the quality of the shots, learning to tweak the camera to get the most from it.

Some real pluses. I like the feel, especially with the MD-100 attachment, it holds well in the hand. The controls, once learned are easy to operate and find. Once the learning curve is down, it is second nature to change settings on the fly. The battery life with the MD-100 attachment (meaning I have two battery units working) is awesome. I have shot thousands of shots on one charge. Only time will tell how long of a life they will have in terms of age, performance they are tops.

Concerns:

low light I notice those dots, have to fix them in PHOTOSHOP CS, something I do not experience with my D70 (a more recent purchase)
I miss shots, the shutter appears to go, but the frame was not recorded. I am not sure if this is a function of the media card (IBM microdrive 1 GB) or lens. This has happened three times to me. The common denominator was rapid shooting, which due to the issue equals lost shots. Again not a problem with the D70.

Camera does NOT allow for picture to be taken without media card unless cabled to a PC. Should allow for exposure check shot with or without media card, being able to take picture with recording it. Minor issue, but has come up as a need more than once.

Overall, I am pleased with the purchase, it does things the D70 does not (just a few, like ISO 3200 and 6400 when needed) and cable release screw in on shutter release button. I paid the top price getting it early in the game, but enjoyed it for over a year and a half before the price drops and newer D70 (which I know own too)

With the D70 out, it would be a tough choice whether I would buy the D100 alone, at the newer reduced price, it would be a tough choice. Having one, I would not want to part with it.

Recommended to buy: Yes

Pros
Battery life; fit, feel with Md-100, cable release screw=in, ISO 3200,6400
Cons
Flash sync slow, low light dots, slower loading than D70
