The Bottom Line:  Neverwinter Nights is a great game. It is fun and is classic D&D.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

Neverwinter Nights is a massive game. Even people who don’t like role playing games will find themselves obsessed with Neverwinter Nights. The game starts off by introducing the story. You are in a time of turmoil for the vast town of Neverwinter. A plague called the Wailing Death has spread across the city that has killed thousands. Lady Aribeth, a prominent character in the story, has called for heroes to help her find the cure for the plague. You are one of those heroes. The first thing you do is create you character.
Creating a character is relatively easy in Neverwinter Nights. If you are in a hurry or you just want to try out a few characters, there are about fifteen pre-made characters of various classes that you can use. There are a ton of options that you have to customize your character. One of the best parts of Neverwinter Nights’ character creation is the “recommended” button. If you don’t know what to do, then you click the recommended button and the computer does what it thinks is best.

Gender: The first thing that you choose is your gender. Being a male or female doesn’t have a big effect on the game.

Race: Then you choose your races. This is a very important part of your character. As with other games, each race has different strengths and weaknesses. There are seven races. They are human, dwarf, elf, gnome, half-elf, half-orc, and Halfling.

Portrait: Then you choose your portrait. This has virtually no effect on the game-play.

Class: Next, you choose your class. This is the profession of your character. It is important to have your character planned out before you start because it is easy to mess up your character. If you want to be a fighter, it would not be smart to be a Halfling. It would be better to be a dwarf. The classes you can choose from are: barbarian, bard, cleric, druid, fighter, monk, paladin, ranger, rogue, sorcerer, and wizard. Each class has special abilities.

Alignment: Then you choose your alignment. This is how you are morally. There are about nine choices from chaotic good to chaotic evil. Your alignment can be important in some cases. Some people react differently to someone who is chaotic evil compared to someone who is chaotic good. There are also items that can only be used by someone who is evil or someone who is good. Your alignment is not set in stone though. Your playing style controls your alignment. If you choose to be chaotic good but go around killing everybody, then your alignment will start to shift towards evil.

Ability Choices: You have six choices for your ability choices. They are strength, dexterity, constitution, intelligence, wisdom, and charisma. Strength is your physical power. Dexterity is your agility. Constitution is your health and stamina. Intelligence is how smart your character is and how well your character learns. Wisdom is your character’s willpower. Charisma is your character’s personality and their ability to persuade. The ability scores is important to coordinate with your race and class decisions. I advise you to use the recommended button for this part of the character creation.
Voice and Name: The final part of creating your character is choosing your voice and name. There are about twenty voices to choose from. My favorite is the high-strung evangelist. Choosing your name can sometimes be hard. It is difficult to choose a name that would fit in with the game. Luckily, there is a name generator that will come up with a name for you.

Going Up Levels: Going up levels is relatively simple in Neverwitner Nights. There is a designated number of experience points you need to go up to the next level. Once you have enough experience points you get a couple of options to upgrade your character. Your health is automatically upgraded upon leveling up. Sometimes you have the option of upgrading your skills and feats.

Skills: Each class has specific skills that you have the option of upgrading. These skills range from pick-pocket to heal. It is wise to choose a couple of skills and get them really high.

Feats: Each class also has some feats to choose from. These feats range from improve two weapon fighting to lightning reflexes. My personal favorite skill is cleave. When you kill an enemy, you get a free hit on another enemy near you.

Curing Wounds: There are numerous ways to cure wounds. The easies way to do this is to rest. Resting will cure all of your wounds. You cannot rest if there is an enemy near you. Another way to heal yourself is to use a potion or use a healer’s kit. The final way to heal yourself is to use a spell.

Radial Menu: Most of your options are displayed on the radial menu. If you right click on something, a circle of options will appear around it. You simply click the option that you want.

Other Party Members: You also have a choice of your party member. You have six choices to choose from. Each of them have their own strengths and weaknesses. They will go up levels with you. They will charge you about three hundred gold pieces to hire them, but they are well worth the money.

Items: There are hundreds of items throughout the game that you can find and use. You can sell almost everything. I found many the magical items best used for selling. Everything worthwhile in the game is expensive.

Multiplayer: My favorite part of the game is the multiplayer. I love having a friend come over for a day and bring his computer so that we can lan. It is a lot more fun playing with another person, although it brings up some new problems. One of the major problems that we fight about is who gets what. Sometimes there is just one box of treasure in a place, and you have to decide who gets what. It is a lot easier though so you might need to turn up the difficulty. Having your friend play with you allows you to have twice as many people playing.

Sound: The sound in the game is ok. It is just enough so that you can enjoy listening to it but not so much that you really notice it. It makes it easier to get into the game although there is nothing special about it.

Graphics: The graphics of the game are ok. They are nothing outstanding, but the figures aren’t 2D. Neverwinter Nights does not need great graphics to be a great game.

Game-play: The game-play of Neverwinter Nights is incredibly easy. To attack an enemy you simply click on them. The tutorial in the beginning of the game is extremely well-done and it makes it easy to get the hang of the game.

Neverwinter Nights is an outstanding game. Everything about it is great. The game is huge. It takes a long time to get through the game. The storyline is incredible. Once you start, it is hard to stop.
