Author's Review
When I was little, I remember being closely attached to this movie. I think the reason might have been because I liked trucks in general. I liked their "superiority" over any other vehicle and have just been interested in them. It used to be (and still is) ONE of my favorite movies. It's also fun to grow up watching the movie, and understanding things you missed out on the previous viewings.
I was watching "Chrsitine" lastnight and it reminded me of Maximum Overdrive when I saw an old truck, and before I got to search the online TV Listings in hope of the movie showing up in the near future, it surprisingly came on after "Christine!" When theres nothing else on TV to watch at night, its a good time to watch the movie.
It's of course not that frightening, but some parts do surprise ya. For example, you wouldn't expect a machine sitting still in silence to go after a person. I liked the steam-roller in the ballpark field. When they show the person's head getting crushed, that's kinda cool in a sick way if they show it. The lawn mower can be surprising too since the boy wasn't paying attention and it was all quiet and all of a sudden the blood-covered mower starts up. I know its a push-mower and has no auto-driven mechanism which seems unreal.
The idea of old big rusty trucks sitting somewhere like in a junk yard, then starting up is kinda freaky. The way the trucks look...headlights broken and all old...you'd never expect it. I like the "head" truck too, with the green face on the front. It's kinda cool...maybe freaky in the dark, and sometimes funny.
I think the idea of the movie in general is unique. There is a recent movie that aired...I think called "trucks," that was the same idea as Maximum Overdrive, but it just wasn't the same. It seemed like they just tried to copy the movie exactly. Sorry guys, the idea has already been used up. I also like the variety of guns, especially the rocket thrower they shoot at truck carrying toilet paper.
The "AD/DC" music is also perfect for the movie and suits it well. It really sets the mood.
Certain people have their opinions, but I think the movie is fun, exciting, entertaining, and sometimes frightening to watch. It sets the mood like in the truck stop when they are all hanging out wondering what to do and the night scenes.
It's a well-put together movie with no special effects necessary, and I won't mind seeing it many more times! I'm rating it on the impact it had and still has on me, and I give it a 5/5!
