Author's Review
This is a fantastic sleeping bag. Warm and well designed, I am glad I spent the money to get this bag rather than trying to save a few dollars.
I hiked with this bag for about a month and a half on the Appalachian Trail, in Southern Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia in October/November/December; I was getting chilly at night and decided I needed a warmer bag. It got down into the low twenties/high teens while I was sleeping in this bag, and I was generally very comfortable. I tend to sleep a little cold, so I was surprised to find a sleeping bag that was somewhat true to its rating.
The bag features a great draft tube; it's attached in a way that keeps it from getting easily snagged in the zipper. The draft collar is also great; warms the bag up quite a bit. With it fastened, I'd wake up sweating, so I didn't end up using it quite a bit. The hood of the bag cinches down so that only your eyes, nose and mouth are exposed; though I haven't slept all night like that, it's comfortable enough that I'm sure I'd be able to. I'm about 5"7', and the regular length fit me pretty well. I tend to toss and turn a lot, and there's plenty of room to wiggle around. One of my favorite features in the bag: by your head, they've sewn a small pocket for a watch, so you don't have to fumble around and get out of your bag in the morning to turn your alarm off. Genius!
The entire bag is very lofty, the foot box is especially so. The 800 fill down is great quality stuff that kept me plenty warm. The shell on the bag I got is Pertex, which works relatively well in keeping the down dry. I don't know that it would stand up to a night out it the rain, but for rubbing against the walls of a wet tent, I never woke up cold in this bag.
My one beef with the bag that it doesn't compress quite as well as I'd like. I guess it's a trade off for it being as warm as it is. The smallest I was ever able to get was about the size of a large watermelon. At a little under 3 pounds, it's comparable in weight to other bags with similar temperature ratings.
It's a little expensive at retail, but if you're able to catch it on sale, definitely pick it up.
