Inexpensive Bare Bones Model, but has glitches

Date of Review: Dec 28, 2007

The Magellan 3100 we were given as a gift seemed to work OK at first. However, upon putting it thru the paces on some known routes, we found it's "quickest" route option ended up being significantly longer than the routes we typically take. Also, the system locked-up on a couple of occasions and shut down completely on another. Further, upon registering the system online, we found that there were several software/firmware glitches recognized by the manufacturer. To Magellan's credit, a software update was downloadable from it's website that reportedly improved performance and fixed glitches, but because of the massive size of the file, it was stated that it would take approximately 5 hrs to download.... even with high speed cable/broadband service!!! The website went on to state that two additional pieces of hardware were required to be purchased in order to complete the upgrade.... an electrical outlet power charger (due to 5hr on-time required) and a memory card (due to size of file and unit's insufficient internal memory). Upon discovering this last bit of information, I decided to throw in the towel and return the product.
