Author's Review
This has to be the best football game on N64. This is the 3rd release of the the Madden series for N64. In the two previous years, Madden was dominated by Acclaim's QB Club series, but the roles have been reversed this year. I own both Madden 2000 and QB Club 2000, and i would have to say Madden definitley takes the cake this year. Though QB Club comes through in the graphics category, Madden beats out QB Club in every other category. Madden 2000 offers exhibition mode, practice mode, season mode, arcade mode, and the franchise mode. In Franchise mode, you are put in control of the operations of a team for 30 seasons. You have to deal with the salary cap, contract negotiations, free agency, drafts, and all that GM stuff. The best part about GM mode is that the players drafted can actually get better as the seasons go on. The draw back with the GM mode is that it is not as realistic as it could be. The salary cap only plays a part in how much money you can use; it does not penalize you for voiding a contract early, etc. Other than that the GM mode does a great job.
Besides all of Madden's features, the game also excels in gameplay and graphics. The graphics may not be up to par with QB Club 2000, but it runs a lot faster then QB Club 2000. I recommend having an expansion pack for this game. Madden 2000 also steps up the realism on the field with the wrap tackles, as well as the ability to break tackles, and various jukes that i have found to be quite useful.
There are 2 modes of gameplay, traditional and arcade. In arcade mode, gameplay is much faster, and there are more unbelievable hits. This mode is like a hybrid of NFL Blitz and traditional Madden. Another great feature about Madden is the customizable AI. You can make the computer lean toward either running or passing, or make it dumb or super smart.
With all these features and great gameplay, Madden is for sure the best football game out for N64. Madden 2000 goes for about $40, but is well worth the money. If you have QB Club 2000, i recommend trading it in for Madden 2000.
