Author's Review
After purchasing one of these printers a couple of weeks ago for a lady who owns a bank (go out and buy me a new laptop and a nice printer I can print photos of my grandchildren with), I was so very impressed that I had to buy one for myself.
Now, rather than going into a bunch of specifications (because you can certainly get that from HP's web site), I'd rather take you on a little tour of some of the things you can do with it.
First of all, the device has a USB connection, but it also has built-in Ethernet (wired network), Wireless Networking, AND BlueTooth.
Now, let me tell you what that means. First of all, if you have a home network like I do, it plugs right into the network, and scanning and printing (as well as other features listed below) become available. If you have a single computer, you can plug it in with USB. If you have a laptop, and don't want to be physically where the printer is, you can use Wireless.
But this is the really COOL part. If you have a camera cell phone with BlueTooth (and your phone supports it, my KRZR does, and I think the RAZR's do too), you can get within 30 feet of the printer, pull up the picture on your cell phone, and select "Print". It finds the printer, and spits out a beautiful 4x6 photo. Just like that. I was floored.
*** Scanning ***
If you're looking for a scanner, this one is great. On the built-in touch screen, touch "Scan", and you can choose if you want to scan to a file (on a flash card), to a CD or DVD, or to a computer. If you touch "Computer", and you have multiple on your network (like my wife and I), it asks you which computer you want to send the image to! It pops up on the screen and says "Greg" or "Beth"! Touch the computer name, and the HP scanning software pops up on that computer.
Also very cool about the scan function is that you can put multiple photos on the scanner bed at once, and the HP software will save those as multiple files. That makes scanning that photo album in a lot quicker!
But it doesn't stop there! Pop off the cover in the lid, and there's an adapter in there which lets you scan SLIDES or NEGATIVES!
*** COPIER ***
You can do BW or Color copies with the touch of a button. Just put the original on the scanner bed (Even photos, it does an amazing job copying a photo as well!) and touch one of the two copy buttons (black or color).
*** Card Readers / DVD Writer ***
One of the really cool features of this unit is the card readers and DVD writer built right in. If you have a digital camera, you can take the memory card from your camera, pop it in the printer, and the touch screen allows you to print your pictures (with automatic red-eye reduction!), or copy them to a CD or DVD. The built-in lightscribe DVD burner lets you store tons of pictures.
But another cool feature about this unit is this; let's say you just want to get the pictures from your camera memory into your computer, without hooking up the USB cable to your camera and copying that way. You can pop the memory card into the printer, go over to your computer, click on "My Computer", and you'll see the printer listed there AS A DRIVE. You can open that, and simply drag and drop your pictures from the printer right to your computer! So, the unit is also a remote drive system for copying!
With the included software, you can even use the printer to burn DVD's of your pictures, then design a LightScribe label. Just flip the LightScribe DVD over, and it will burn a professional looking black-and-white label right onto the disc.
*** Printer ***
The printer is of excellent quality, delivering 4x6 photos in as little as 10 seconds, and full-color prints at up to 34 pages per minute! I have also run CD labels through it without issue. The printer has two paper trays, one for standard Legal or A4 paper, and the other for photo paper (4x6", with or without tabs). The printer will automatically pull the paper it needs. You can set the bluetooth print function to which tray you want (I set mine to photo paper, of course, and it gave me a PERFECT 4x6 borderless photo of my lovely wife right from my phone in about 15 seconds!)
The ink loads easily in the front, using 6 cartridges (5 color, and one larger black cartridge). Just lift the front of the unit, and it flips up, and the cartridges load right in front.
*** Setup ***
Setup was a breeze. Pull off the tape and plastic protection, turn it on, and the display walks you through loading the color- and image-coded ink cartridges. It asks for paper to be loaded, then calibrates itself. Setting up on the network was a breeze, and the software installed easily on the computer, finding the printer and creating the ports automatically. I was printing within about 15 minutes... it took longer to open all the ink cartridges and get them snapped into place than it did to do the rest of the setup.
I would recommend this machine to anyone looking for a well-built all-in-one unit, or anyone wishing to retire (as I was) their copier, scanner, and old inkjet printer. The DVD writer, card reader, remote file copying, slides and negative scanning were all bonuses to an extremely versatile unit.
