Product Review

If Will has a passion for anything, it's Hip Hop.

by   jamino ,   Mar 30, 2005

Pros:  Will sticks to his guns, putting together once of the best albums ever released.

Cons:  No cons. This is what Will Smith is about.

The Bottom Line:  This album is truly a masterpiece. Don't just listen to it, LISTEN to it. Will has a lot to say and he's saying it with style.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I bought this album hoping to God, Big Will would come out of his shell FOR ONCE and tell the world how he really feels. I looked at the track list, gained an air of irony from the song named "Mr. Niceguy" and knew, before I put the CD in the stereo, that this was the rap I had been waiting for. I don't think I had EVER been so happy to hear a song before in my life.

"Mr. Niceguy" is a breath of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Corny pun? I don't care. The sarcasm blaring from my speakers from the first few words of the opening chorus was pure, undeniable Will Smith. You'll never enjoy listening to an album more than you will enjoy listening to Lost and Found.

I've no doubt some hip-hop fans will moan on about Will's "wooden" and "corny" style, as some have already done, but if they do, they will only be judging Will's flow against the flows of a completely different brand of rappers. Why? Because Will is in a league of his own. He MAKES hip-hop his own by not giving a DAMN about whether he sounds like the rest and continues to stick to his guns. If you are one of these traditionalist hip-hop fans, listen to the actual song "Lost and Found" and you'll be smashed in the face with your own opinions and stamped on the forehead with "I DON'T GIVE A RAT'S *** - Will Smith". "I wish I made that" is yet another highly entertaining track on this amazing album, which clearly wants to cry out, WHAT THE HELL DO I HAVE TO DO?

We see a side of Will that we have never seen before in this album. Will has made a habit of making thought-provoking speeches in his raps, and in "Ms. Holy Roller" his soliloquy expresses strong opinions of religion, making strong references through the album of 9/11. If any of you have had ANY opinion of God in your life (What you have? WOW!) then this track will tie a concrete block to your ankles and plunge you to the bottom of an ocean of questions the you may not want answering.

Snoop Dogg features in "Pump ya Brakes", Mary J. Blige in "Tell me why" and Will's old partner, DJ Jazzy Jeff also scratches in the opening track "Here he comes", to which Will raps to the retro Spiderman theme tune. Also, boys who have troubles getting the ladies in nightclubs, may want to take heed of Hitch's advice in "If you can't dance (slide)".

Lost and Found is an expression of "I'm back and you know it" and if you thought you'd seen the last of the Prince, you got another think coming. 10 years, pssfff, that's nothing.
