Logitech LX7 Cordless Optical Mouse - The mouse has been clipped
Date of Review: Mar 27, 2007
The Bottom Line: This is an awesome piece of technological wonder with the power saver and invisible beam optics, I would recommend this to everyone for their next mouse purchase.
I happened to be at Walmart looking for a cordless mouse for my wife to hookup to her laptop. We already had a decent Logitech cordless mouse on our desktop computer, so I was looking to buy another Logitech. My wife and I tend to stick with brands that we have good luck with and one of those companies that makes computers accessories is Logitech.
Over the years we have bought our keyboards, mice, speaker systems and web cams made by Logitech, so I really didn't look at any other brand when I set out to purchase the mouse for my wife's laptop.
When I was looking at all the Logitech models that Walmart had, one stood out and it was LX7 Cordless Optical Mouse. It stood out because of it shape; it looks like an upside down tear drop. Since my wife has small hands I figured it would be much easier for her to use than your typical mouse.
I soon found out that there isn't much typical about this mouse, not even the scroll wheel is typical. Not only does the wheel roll front to back, but it also moves side to side.
Another not so typical feature is the placement of the forward and back buttons; on top of the mouse just behind the scroll wheel. Usually if the mouse has the forward and back buttons you will find them placed on either side of the mouse. We don't typically use the those buttons, but I figured I would mention it since it unique feature.
The single most impressive thing about this mouse has got to the battery life; 8 months of use with the original set of batteries. We have been using another cordless mouse from Logitech before I bought this one and a set of batteries wouldn't last more than a few months for me. You see, we leave our main computer on all the time and that means the mouse was always on and wearing down the batteries.
When I read on the outside of the package that Logitech boasts that the LX7 Cordless Optical mouse will cut down on the number of batteries and it isn't a rechargeable, I was a bit skeptical. That is until I learned first hand that their claim was not just boasting, it was a fact. I held off writing this review until after I burned through the original set of two "AA" batteries that can in the package with the mouse. I found out on that day that there is another cool feature of this cordless mouse that I haven't seen on any other brand of cordless mice: a battery low level indicator light. It is a little light that warns you that the batteries are starting to get low and you should replace them soon. The indicator is on top of the mouse just behind the forward and back buttons.
I will let you in on a couple of secrets that Logitech has employed in this mouse that allows it to have such a long battery life; Battery-saving Invisible Light™ optical technology uses less power than ordinary optical mice. It also has a auto standby mode and an on/off button to help conserve power. Information can be found on Logitech's website.
A little bit about the Battery saving Invisible Light™ optical technology; no longer do we have the blinding red laser beam coming from the bottom of our mouse. The Logitech LX7 uses invisible beam and it indicated by a small green light on the bottom of the mouse to control the cursor movement. With this ultra responsive cursor control it can achieve a whopping 1100 dpi and that is truly amazing.
One last cool feature to talk about on the Logitech LX7 Cordless Optical Mouse is that it is truly cordless. Most cordless mice have cut the cord from the actual mouse, but they still have a cord running from a receiver going to your computer. Here is where Logitech went one step further; they cut the cord from the receiver to the computer to make it completely cordless. You simply pop the USB key into an open USB slot and with the software loaded on the CD that came with the mouse you are ready to use the LX7 Cordless Optical Mouse.
As you can see Logitech packed this mouse with plenty of high tech features that I believe most of you would find very appealing when you are thinking about replacing your worn out mouse.
My final thoughts
I think Logitech hit a homerun with the LX7, it is feature packed and very easy to setup and use. I think the battery saving features alone are worth the purchase price and add to it the sleek design which fits perfect into smaller hands; like my children and it still works well with larger hands like my wife and I.
I do have one bit of warning for you; the standby mode did take a little bit of getting used to. The first time I experienced the standby mode I thought my system locked up because the mouse didn't respond right away. I soon learned that was the mouse basically went to sleep and it had to wake itself up and then it responded to the movement of the mouse. The cursor movement is definitely as advertised by Logitech, I love the extra sensitivity of LX7, it makes for much more precise movement of the cursor on the screen.
The last thing I want to talk about is the fact that this is truly a cordless mouse, Logitech cut all the cords by using a USB key style receiver that plugs directly into any open USB plug on your PC and you will no longer have the cord even from the receiver in your way on the desk or table. I have yet to have any troubles with the USB receiver not being able to pick up the signal from the mouse.
