Author's Review
I bought a 5-pack of the Kushies diapers about 6 months ago, when I wanted to give cloth diapers a try. Until then, I was only using 7th Generation chlorine-free diapers. My daughter was about 9 months old then and, after some research, I decided to give the Kushies a try, mainly because they were inexpensive (about $8 each at the time). I have bought another 5-pack soon after as I wanted to exclusively use cloth diapers at home.
These are all-in-one diapers made of thick cotton (inside) and vinyl (outside). They close with Velcro and are machine-washable. There is a long layer of cotton you can either fold (for a girl) or extend (for a boy) to increase absorbence in specific areas.
I have been using these diapers for several months now and here is my opinion on them:
FIT : These are on the narrow side. My baby's bottom is not completely covered by the diaper although she has a VERY small frame. I would not recommend buying them if your baby is a little plump. I have tried to use these diapers exclusively at home but I ended up using disposable at night, because the tight fit irritated her skin. As a result, I was NOT able to switch to cloth diapers at home throughout the day, as I was hoping to.
ABSORBANCE : I thought these diapers absorbed well, although they saturate faster than disposable diapers.
LEAKAGE : If you manage to get a snug fit with the Velcro tabs, then there is not much leakage. You have to make sure your baby does not spend too much time in the same diaper because, again, they do not absorb like disposable diapers. It is probably easier to get a snug fit for a boy because you do not have to fold the inside layer of cotton like you do for a girl. Make sure you keep all the cotton inside the diaper, if not, it will leak.
CLEANING : You can clean the soiled diapers by swirling them in your toilet before putting them in a bucket of water and baking soda to prevent smell. They clean well in the wash and they can go to the drier. I used to dry these diapers in the dryer but I find that 1) they do not dry well, 2) they tend to keep a smell because of the humidity, and 3) they wear out too fast. After 6 months of utilization, I cannot believe how much these diapers have thinned out. I would not recommend putting them in the dryer at all.
EASE OF USE : Overall, I think these are easy to use, especially because they are all-in-ones. There is no insert, no pins. If you can change a disposable diaper, you can change the Kushies all-in-ones.
Overall, I think these are a a good value. If you are on a budget and plan to use both washable and disposable diapers, the Kushies are a good option. If not, there are better quality diapers out there, like the Bum Genius, which I really love. They are twice as expensive but you can use them from newborn.
