Author's Review
Janes Addiction is the band responsible for laying the bricks for the alternative explosion in the early 90's. You may be thinking Nirvana, Pearl Jam ect. But Jane's Addiction were on a different level, not the grunge wagon. Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro are the sound that is Jane's Addiction. It is a very unique style and I recommend this album to everyone who likes alt. rock. It is mostly b-sides, demos, out takes and live tracks. There is also four new tracks in which Flea from The Red Hot Chili Peppers plays bass on. It has alternative cuts or versions of a lot of popular songs which is great, along with some great new tracks. This is known by a lot of people to be a mere money maker by the inventors of the festival Loolapolooza but I disgaree. The album artwork is always beautiful. The layout is meanings of songs, thoughts and awesome pictures.
1.Kettle Whistle-This is a new track from the album. It is definitly a very strong sounding song. Seven minutes of great vibes. It starts off with sounds of bass drums and some sound effects. It stands out very strong and is great to start the album off with. The Beautiful Son chrous is outstanding. As are the lyrics. ''What makes the baby cry, what makes the poor baby older then the rich one, why do we need to be loved to someone else'' As these lyrics are being sung some awesome guitar beats are being played.
2. Ocean Size(Demo 1988)- This is featured on Nothing's Shocking. The version isn't all that different from the original by a great to have for the collector or new fan. It starts out slow with almost a celtic type of guitar. Then kicks in to the band jamming with Farrell literally belting his soul out. I think this is one of the standout tracks of the bands career. The vocals are so strong and passionite. Not to mention it shows how well the band works with each other on different levels. It goes from soft to hard to soft to almost everything without repeating itself.
3. My Cat's Name Is Maceo- This is from an 88 demo and then got rerecorded and put on this collection. It isn't that bad of a song. It is pretty good. The drums are pretty fast and marching band sounding. The guitar riff stays nice and slow as Farrell sings. We then hear a trumpet with goes right along with the feeling of the song. The lyrics are a bit strange but the vocals make up for it. Towards the end we get to hear Farrell sing lalala in different varitiions which is really cool.
4. Had A Dad(Studio out take 88')- Despite the lack of great lyrics the guitar beat and other insturments mesh nicely. Farrell doesn't let us down with a weak vocal proformance either. Jane's Addiction has a great feeling at taking your vibes and making them feel as if you were in another place. And this song isn't any different. 'If you've seen my dad, tell him my brothers all got mad, beating on each other' Farrell sings softley right until Navarro goes into a beautiful solo with Farrell singing over at points.
5. So What!-This is another new track. This song sounds a bit more like Farrels work with Porno For Pyros rather then Jane's Addiction. Never the less this song is awesome. Starting off with Farrell telling everyone not to go back to work tommorow. The bridge to this song really stands out. The lyrics mostly. 'In the early morning , the sun is yawing' They are sang with Farrell's unique take on singing. Towards the last minute we just hear jamming of all sorts including the trumpet again.
6. Jane Says- Possibly Jane's Addictions most well known. This is a live version from 91'. It starts out with just Farrell making some vocal noises and the rest of the band jamming almost in perfect harmony. Then Farrell counts off and comes in the famous guitar riff as the audience screams. It has a very beach like sound to it. The does a great job at capturing the intensity of the live show without being there. Only wishing you were.
7. Mountain Song(demo)-This is the demo version of another standout track from Nothing's Shocking. It seems a lot more heavy but a bit unprofessional sounding. Never the less this is just as good as the regular version in my opinion. ''Cash in now honey, cash in now baby.'' If you've heard that line or the neo-psychedelic bass line then I'm sure you've heard this. A lot more echo affects are used in this version then the regular.
8. Slow Drivers- This is another old demo that got recorded before the release of this album. It is very soft and tribal sounding. The lyrics once again stand the test to Farrells deep watery sounding vocals. The drums are mellow along with the guitar and bass line. It for the most part isn't a stand out track but there is no reason to switch songs. This is a beautiful song to relax too at home or the beach.
9. Three Days-This is a live version of the song. It is a bit too weak at first and almost boring. But once Farrell starts to sing about the shadows of the morning light you fall deep into a trance. Farrell almost chants at some points in this song. The solo is intense but doesn't seem to fit the song. It is a bit to fast and hard. Most of the song is insturmental with drums and guitar. Then again it is a 12 minute rendition.
10. Ain't No Right-This is another live track. This starts off really slow and adds a lot of echo effects. It is more of a jam song then anything else. The drums are really great though and there is a lot of enegry throughout the song. But Farrells vocals are a bit incoherent except when he gives us a great howl.
11. Up The Beach-Another live song. This song seems to talk awhile to beginning. By the time the song is almost over you forget it even started. It may be one of the weakest tracks on the album. More of a jam song again. If you like jam songs you'd love this. It is a great insturmental, I give it that. The guitar is much faster then the bass, drums and perrys chants at times.
12. Stop- Live again. This song is pretty fast and intense. The album seems to be winding down at this point. The end where Farrell talks screams to the crowd with no music in the background is interesting. This sounds a lot like early Jane's Addiction. It has more a funky metal vibe to it. But still holds the signature Jane's Addiction sound.
13. Been Caught Stealing-This is a studio out take of the cult classic. Farrell entertains the crowd by playing with their morals about stealing friends girlfriends or boyfriends. Anyway once this song starts it pops in swinging up beat and happy. His voice sounds a lot more different then the original but that isn't a bad thing. He just seems a bit more mellow and laid back. The bass and guitar is still pumping. I enjoy the ending to this better then original. Farrell seems to do the do da do da a lot better on this version then the album version.
14. Wh***s -This is live. Navarro is the one who shines through in this song. Giving us all the energy and power he has. While he takes a small rest Farrell sounds like he is almost eating the mic singing. Meanwhile Navarro plays the strings like they were attached to his fingers at birth.
15. City-This is from 1988. It starts off like a jam session in the woods. Or at least sounds like it. Navarro jamming on an acoustic guitar while Farrell sings soothingly beside him. This has a nice up beat feel and great varities of ranges. The sound seems to go in and out at times but it isn't too big of a problem. Even though it is only a little over two minutes you feel like you just sat down with Jane's Addiction and had a jam session.
This album is perfect for everyone that likes alternative music. Or just Jane's Addiction. If I'm in the mood for Janes Addiction I always seem to put this album in, rather then Ritual De Lo Habitual or Nothing's Shocking. Despite what the critics say this album is a great collection of Jane's Addictions work in the form they were at all different times.
