Author's Review
I'm on my third Jeep. I just bought a 2002 Wrangler Apex. It is impractical, boxy, small, uncomfortable, windy, cold in the winter, not at ALL for highway driving, barely has room for 3 bags of groceries, you can't hear the radio and you'll feel somewhat out of control at speeds over 65.
And I pray that Chrysler never changes this vehicle one bit.
Why? It is also original, rugged, classic, unbelievably FUN, reliable, durable, has true cache and great resale value and loves dirt. The moment you own one you become a part of a club, and you'll notice the little wave from other Jeep drivers right away. It's not fashionable or trendy and you don't have to make 6 figures to own one. Your dog will love coming with you when you have the top down and there is no room for strollers and 6 kids with soccer gear (thank God). Plus, you'll know right away if you should give the guy/girl you're with a second date by the way they react when they see it. You're either a Jeep person or you're not.
Weirdly, it is a great vehicle for tooling around town as well as roughing it off-road. There is an immediacy to the handling that feels great and it is easy to maneuver and park. My Jeep has leather seats that are really cushy and comfortable but this is not the vehicle for you if you live in your car or need to spread out during a long commute, there just is no cab room for that sort of thing. The quality/craftsmanship rating makes no sense for this vehicle. If you determine quality by quietness, you won't like a Jeep. If you gauge it by how well it's built you'll love it. Same for handling. It handles great at the mall or in the woods but not necessarily on I-10. But here's the thing folks, you're going to know if a Jeep is for you as soon as you see it and ride in it. There is nothing subtle or hidden or hard to figure out about a Jeep. It is what it is with no apology, and that is why most of us love it.
If you want practical, buy an Escort or a mini-van; if you want comfort buy a Lincoln; beauty, a Lexus; status, a Mercedes.
If you want unbelievable fun buy a Jeep. Or three.
