Author's Review
Do you work for or have some type of affiliation with the hospitality industry? If you do, then you will probably enjoy Hotel & Motel Management, a magazine about the business of operating a hotel or resort property. This magazine is the leading publication of the accommodations business, with timely articles to assist management and other hotel personnel with the overall operation of this type of enterprise.
Features of This Magazine:
Each copy of Hotel & Motel Management contains about 50 to 70 pages with the following monthly features:
News- The latest happenings in the world of accommodations are discussed here, with special topical coverage like development, design, timeshares, technology, and more.
Hotel Operations- Here, you will find some special articles about some unique topic. It can be almost anything, from the threads per inch in hotel linens to ways to save money on air conditioning costs.
Departments- The remainder of this business magazine is comprised of short, one or two page articles. Department titles are self- explanatory and they include Perspective, Letters, Sales Clinic, Franchise Law, Energy Star Update, Events, Supplier News, Ad/Editorial Index, Marketplace, Classifieds, etc. Each issue ends with a one- page closer titled Checking Out- a collage of small photos, trivia facts, celebrity pics, quotations, etc. about the hotel business.
Cost to Subscribe:
Hotel & Motel Management is issued 21 times per year, or about once every 2.5 weeks. The base cost of this magazine is $53.50, which works out to $2.55 per copy. Almost every place I checked for this magazine on- line was offering it at this same basic rate.
If you work for or are affiliated in some way with the management of a hotel, you may very well qualify to receive this publication free of charge. Just logon to the company web site (listed below), answer a few questions, and you can get this magazine for free provided you work in the industry.

Final Thoughts:
Hotel & Motel Management is a business publication covering the accommodations industry. This magazine has been around for more than 130 years, making it one of the oldest continuing publications in existence.
Most of this magazine deals with business- related issues and stories about hotel ownership, operation, and the like. I have worked in the accommodations business and I can testify that there is much useful information in this magazine. The articles are mostly short, but they cover topics that are important to those who work in this business. There are articles about buying and selling hotels; improving the efficiency of check in and check out; buying specific amenities and decorations; increasing occupancy during the slowest times of the year; and so on. Some of the articles are general in scope and can apply to anyone in the business. Others are geared toward a specific line of accommodations, like a luxury suite or an all- inclusive resort.
This magazine is more of a business publication and because of that, its articles are often direct and impersonal. Some of them are written about the industry as a whole and while they make for some pleasant reading, they are not necessarily very practical. For example, it is common to find articles where experienced managers at established chain hotels will talk about the company name and its value to business. Again, this is nice to glance at, but it isnt something that will apply to anyone who works in a hotel and many people will find articles like these rather boring.
The majority of the articles found in this magazine, however, are very practical and they often present some timely advice. Read about ways to improve customer satisfaction by making check- out faster; ways to improve occupancy rates; methods that save money on maintenance; and much more. In every issue, there are at least a few articles that a hotel/motel/resort manager can relate to.
Unlike most magazines, this one is large in physical size, measuring 10.5 by 14 inches. It is short in length and bound by staples, so it is rather flimsy. The cover has a newspaper- like appearance, with the beginning sections of articles that continue somewhere within. And Hotel & Motel Management has tons of advertising, with ads covering about eighty- percent of the pages of each issue. Advertisements center on hotels for sale, amenities to buy, and services to purchase. It is one of the most heavily- advertised magazines (in terms of percentage of pages with ads) in publication.
Overall, Hotel & Motel Management is a good publication for those who work in this industry. If you dont work in this type of business, you still might find some useful information relating to general business practices, like marketing and customer satisfaction. The magazine would be better if it was longer and less cluttered with ads, but it is still a good way to learn about the world of management in respect to accommodations.
